About the Map
The map focuses on the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia, paying particular attention to the area’s historical background, recreation opportunities and economy.
It also highlights tourism attractions, wine and craft beer facilities and oysters, for which the region is widely known.
Dating back to the 1600s, the Bay area was populated with thriving Native American communities.
It was home to diverse wildlife and had fertile soil, and was the location of the second permanent English settlement in the Americas.
With time, port towns were established along the coast and the Bay’s rich bounty of oysters and blue crab led to a thriving fishing industry.
Today, that region continues to be the heart of Virginia’s coast.
