In Design: Telegraph Road at Hayfield Road in Fairfax County
Cost and schedule ►
Public outreach ►

Please note: VDOT is working with Fairfax County, including Supervisor Rodney Lusk, to develop additional concepts to improve pedestrian safety while minimizing right of way impacts adjacent to the Telegraph Road and Hayfield Road intersection. These new concepts and previous concepts will be presented via an online survey later this year, read more in Supervisor Lusk's letter to VDOT and VDOT's response letter.
This project's potential improvements in the area of Telegraph Road (Route 611) and Hayfield Road (Route 635) include:
- Adding a second northbound Telegraph Road lane through the intersection
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramp upgrades
- Reconfiguring southbound Telegraph Road just beyond Hayfield Road by converting the existing on-road parking to a second through lane
- Converting the eastbound Hayfield Road through lane to a shared left-turn through lane
Preliminary design options include the potential widening of the footprint of Telegraph Road to the west or to the east in the area of the Hayfield Road intersection, and upgrading and/or adding pedestrian facilities.
At the intersection, Telegraph Road averages about 21,000 vehicles a day and Hayfield Road averages about 10,000 based on 2019 data.
This project is financed with state and local funding. Estimated project costs continue to be developed as the proposed improvements and preliminary design are refined.
Benefits
