In Design: Backlick Road and Leesville Boulevard Intersection Improvements in Fairfax County

This project will make improvements at the intersection of Backlick Road (Route 617) and Leesville Boulevard. 

The improvements include:

  • Traffic signal flashing yellow arrows for both directions of Backlick Road
  • Three additional signalized crosswalks: across Backlick Road on southern side of intersection, across Leesville Boulevard, and across the entrance to the office park 
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramp upgrades

At the intersection, Backlick Road averages up to 35,000 vehicles a day and Leesville Boulevard averages 5,100 based on 2019 data.

Estimated Costs
Preliminary Engineering: $62,000
Right of Way Acquisition and Utility Relocation: $64,000
Construction: $548,000
Total: $675,000 

This project is financed with federal and state Highway Safety Improvement Program funding.


This project aims to improve driver and pedestrian safety as well as operations at the intersection.
