Winchester Safety Rest Area / Welcome Center

This is one of three facilities completely reconstructed as part of a $20 million effort to update 14 safety rest areas and welcome centers.
The $6 million project to reconstruct the Winchester Safety Rest Area and Welcome Center began in May 2006.
The facility reopened April 8, 2008.
The building is constructed to meet United States Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. News release, LEED brochure (PDF, 867 KB)
The new building has approximately 15,000 square feet, additional restrooms and grounds and parking improvements that better serve travelers.
It replaces the former 2,800 square-foot building, which was constructed in 1970.
