Route 675 Bridge over Stony Creek - Shenandoah County |
Project at a Glance
On August 10, 2007 the Route 675 bridge over Stony Creek was permanently closed due to deterioration of portions of the bridge. The one-lane concrete deck arch bridge built in the early 1900s was posted for a 10-ton load. The superstructure (a concrete arch) and substructures (piers or abutments) are in poor condition with advanced stages of concrete deterioration, including spalling (breaking away of pieces of concrete) and scour (flowing water is eating away stream bed material causing undermining of the footings). Cracking has occurred throughout the concrete arches and the top of the superstructure. Motorists are using Route 623 to Route 768 to Route 42 as a detour.
It is anticipated construction of the new bridge will begin during the summer of 2008.
