Occasional flagger traffic control is possible in late September and early October 2019 as contractors stage equipment and set up the work zone.
Beginning Tuesday, October 8, Route 624 will be closed between Route 643 (Howellsville Road) and Route 661 (Fairground Road). Signs will direct motorists on one of the following detours:
- Drivers approaching from the south will turn right on Route 643 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then to Route 638 in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn left on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) and left on Route 624 (Red Gate Road/Milldale Road) to reach the end of the detour.
- Drivers approaching from the north will follow Route 624 (Milldale Road/Red Gate Road) north and turn right on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn right on Route 638 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then Route 643, to reach the end of the detour.

This project includes extensive improvements to the Route 624 (Morgan Ford Road) southern approach to the Morgan Ford bridge over the Shenandoah River. The project location is about 0.2-mile north of the intersection of Route 643 (Howellsville Road).
The southern approach to the Morgan Ford bridge has been repeatedly damaged by high water since completion of the bridge replacement in May 2018. This rehabilitation will use metal sheet pilings and large stone to stabilize and strengthen the roadway and roadbed.
During construction, the portion of Route 624 between Route 643 and Route 661 (Fairground Road) will be closed to through traffic. Property owners on either side of the Morgan Ford bridge will have access to their properties. Detour information is in the Traffic Alerts section of this page.
The Morgan Ford canoe/kayak access point (maintained by the Virginia Department Of Game & Inland Fisheries) will be closed during construction. Boaters will not be able to put in or take out at this location.
Benefits
This project is intended to help prevent roadway damage from future flood events, which will also minimize the time Route 624 is closed to traffic.
