Project Details
The project replaced the bridges and their approaches in both the northbound and southbound lanes. An innovative traffic management system was used to keep traffic flowing during the construction. This involved traffic cameras, a safety service patrol and travel time system. The I-81 improvements at Maury River include new three-lane bridges in each direction with the necessary approach roadways on either side of the bridges. The elevation of the new bridges are approximately the same as the previous bridges.
These improvements are in line with the direction the CTB gave VDOT in their resolution in October 2006 when they took action on the I-81 Tier I draft environmental study. It provides local safety improvements on relatively small segments of the roadway.
Why is this project built?
The existing bridges were built in 1966 and were just two lanes wide. Studies in 1998 and 1999 indicated the bridges should be three lanes wide to safely handle the amount of traffic using them today and 20 years into the future.Contacts
