Alvin Trout, P.E.
The purpose of this project is to replace the Route 685 bridge and approaches at Little Calfpasture River.
The existing bridge, built around 1925, is a single-lane structure comprised of two concrete spans with a total length of 68 feet 11 inches. The bridge is classified as structurally deficient and is a candidate for federal funds for replacement. “Structurally deficient” does not mean that a structure is in danger of imminent failure, but that its condition has deteriorated to a point where it should be replaced or it can no longer carry today’s heavier vehicle loads.
The bridge will be replaced by a new single-lane structure with a roadway width of about 15 feet 8 inches. Safety will be improved with the addition of railings, resulting in an overall width of roughly 18 feet 2 inches. The length and alignment of the new structure will likely remain similar to the existing bridge.
This project will be designed using federal guidelines for very low-volume local roads (less than 400 vehicles a day). This allows the replacement bridge to be constructed with the same width, provided it uses a similar or more favorable alignment.
The existing bridge has an average traffic count of 75 vehicles per day, and a projected count of 77 vehicles per day for the design year of 2027.
The estimate for the project is $1,116,648 with $278,518 for preliminary engineering, $36,745 for right-of-way and utilities, and $801,385 for construction. Construction is scheduled for 2016.

Benefits of Project
This project replaces an existing substandard bridge on a state-maintained road that serves county residents. If not replaced, the existing bridge will continue to deteriorate and would eventually have to be closed to vehicular traffic.
The existing bridge will be closed during construction. The work zone will be marked and signed to help traffic follow a 3.7 mile long detour.
