Route 11/460 to I-81 at exit 128 (Ironto)
What's being done?
Two miles of Route 603 (North Fork Road) in Montgomery County will be reconstructed to improve safety and traffic flow. The purpose of the project is to provide a better connection between Route 11/460 and Interstate 81 at exit 128 (Ironto).
The project entails bringing the existing two-lane roadway up to current design standards by
- Widening the travel lanes from nine feet to 12 feet
- Constructing five-foot paved shoulders
- Improving vertical and horizontal alignment
- Replacing drainage structures
- Adding a right turn lane from Route 603 onto Route 11/460
Timeline & Traffic Impacts
The road is closed to traffic from April 2015 to May 2016. A detour is in place. Drivers who travel from I-81 to homes on Route 460 can use Exit 132 at Dixie Caverns. Home owners living along North Fork Road will have access to their homes during construction.
Work on this project is anticipated to be completed in summer 2016.
In order to remove hillside as part of the reconstruction of Route 603, blasting of the hillside is taking place on the project and will continue until further notice.
Weather permitting, periodic blasts will occur Monday through Friday, during daytime hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Area residents and those in the surrounding areas, may feel vibrations or loud noise from blasts occurring on the project as they blast rock from the hillside.
ROUTE 603 LANE CLOSURES
Flaggers will direct traffic on Route 603 (North Fork Road) from I-81 exit 128 to the intersection of Route 11/460 during daylight hours. Flaggers may control traffic during daytime hours on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Pavement ends at Peddler Creek Road and turns into gravel for 800 feet and then returns to asphalt. The speed limit has been reduced to 35mph in the work zone.
A design public hearing was held on Thursday, May 19, 2011. The links below are for the brochure and displays presented at the public hearing.
