Route 620 (Stony Point Road) Bridge Replacement
|Replacing 100 year old bridge over the Appomattox River|
Project at a Glance
Winston Phillips, project manager
The primary purpose of this project is to replace the aging Route 620 truss bridge over the Appomattox River with a new structure on the existing alignment. The current bridge was built in 1913 and is substandard to handle future traffic volumes. High maintenance cost and weight restrictions make replacement necessary in order to provide a safer route for drivers.
Minor roadway improvements will be necessary. During construction, Route 620 travelers will use Route 621 (Fowlkes Bridge Road) as a detour. Following right of way acquisition, construction is expected to begin in summer 2015 and be completed within six months.
According to 2012 traffic counts, the Route 620 bridge carries approximately 98 vehicles per day.
A public information meeting was held on Monday, December 9, 2013. The public meeting brochure is available.
