What's being done?
VDOT will install safety features to north and southbound Rt. 1 between England Street and Pleasant Street (approximately 1,500 feet or 0.4 miles) to include a new median, turn lanes, sidewalks and traffic signals. The project also includes improvements to the road surface, utilities and drainage.
What is the purpose of the project?
The goal of the project is to provide a safer and more efficient roadway for motorists and pedestrians.
How will construction affect traffic?
This busy, four-lane, commercial corridor carries 19,500 vehicles per day. Lane closures are restricted from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. No work will be done on the weekends:
- Phase 1 & 2 (Jan.-May 2008): Involves work to the northbound side of Rt. 1 with single lane closures during non-peak hours.
- Phase 3 (May-Sept. 2008): Involves work on the southbound side of Rt. 1 with single lane closures during non-peak hours.
- Phase 4 (late 2008): Involves work within the median. No lane closures are planned as the lanes will be temporarily shifted to accommodate four lanes of traffic at all times.
How will my property be impacted?
Any temporary construction easements or additional right of way needed for this project was negotiated with the property owner during the development phase. At least one entrance must remain open for each property during construction to allow for public access. Some inconveniences are to be expected. However, VDOT will make adjustments if necessary to minimize disruptions.
