Traffic Impacts

(HANOVER) - During the below closures, crews are demolishing the old Route 54 structure over I-95. Traffic shifted to the new structure earlier this week; the temporary signals have been removed and traffic heading west on Rt. 54 now can travel through instead of the previous stopping condition. Drivers on Rt. 54 and I-95 are strongly encouraged to use an alternate route during work hours or adjust travel times. Expect major delays.

Due to an additional local bridge replacement on Washington Highway/Route 1 near Ellets Crossing Road (Route 641) and Falling Creek, drivers can expect delays along the Route 1 corridor if used as an alternate route. Traffic has been shifted to one lane in each direction at that location. This project is expected to be complete by fall 2015.

I-95 travel:

The speed limit on Interstate 95 in both directions has been reduced from 70 mph to 65 mph from mile marker 90 to mile marker 93 for the duration of the Route 54 bridge replacement project.

Route 54 travel:

Route 54 has been reduced to one 12-foot lane in each direction between Hill Carter Parkway and Mount Herman Road. Additionally, a temporary traffic signal has been installed at the interchange of I-95 north and Route 54 west to ease exiting interstate traffic congestion. For the duration of the project, the posted speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph. Drivers can expect delays, particularly during peak travel times.

Project description

The project will replace the Route 54 superstructure over Interstate 95 and approaches, as needed. The replacement will raise the vertical clearance on north and southbound I-95 to 16.5 feet.
