Features

Route 288 is a four-lane interstate-style highway with 10 interchanges and a bridge over the James River. The entire Route 288 corridor from the Powhite Parkway in Chesterfield County to I-64 in Goochland County opened to traffic on Nov. 19, 2004. The corridor was opened in phases as segments were completed:
  • Phase 1: Segment linking I-64 to Route 250 (Broad Street) in Goochland County opened to traffic at the end of 2003.


  • Phase 2: From Route 250 (Broad Street) to Route 6 (Patterson Avenue) opened to traffic in the spring 2004.


  • Phase 3: Route 6 (Patterson Avenue) to Route 60 (Midlothian Turnpike) opened to traffic in August 2004.


  • Phase 4: Route 60 (Midlothian Turnpike) to Route 76 (Powhite Parkway) opened November 2004.



Project Updates

The Woolridge Road interchange and extension are now open to traffic. The speed limits which were previously marked 55 mph in the construction zones have been raised to 65 mph.

Project Updates

Approximately 17.5 miles of Route 288 were built in three projects between the Powhite Parkway Extension (Route 76) in Chesterfield County and Interstate 64 in Goochland County.

One VDOT-managed segment of Route 288 stretches from Route 76 to Charter Colony Parkway in Chesterfield County and the other VDOT-managed segment stretches from Charter Colony Parkway to the Powhatan County line.

  • From: Route 76 (Powhite Parkway) to Charter Colony Parkway (Chesterfield County)

    • Type of road: 4-lane, interstate-style, with interchanges at Route 76 and Lucks Lane; extension of Woolridge Road at John Tyler Community College (Midlothian campus) and Route 60.


    • Construction began: March 1999

  • From: Charter Colony Parkway to Chesterfield/Powhatan county line

    • Type of road: 4-lane, interstate-style, with interchanges at Woolridge Road and Midlothian Turnpike (Route 60). Otterdale Road was shifted to a new alignment as a result of the construction. On the eastern side of Route 288, Otterdale Road now ends with a cul-de-sac. On the western side, Otterdale Road has been relocated to tie into Route 60 approximately a half-mile west of the Route 288 crossing.


    • Construction Began: early 2001

  • From: Chesterfield/Powhatan county line to I-64 in Goochland County

    • APAC-Virginia, Inc. oversees construction: This segment is funded under Virginia's Public-Private Transportation Act of 1995.


    • Type of road: 4-lane, interstate-style, with interchanges at Route 711, Patterson Avenue (Route 6), West Creek Parkway, Ridgefield Parkway, Route 250 and I-64. A four-lane bridge was built over the James River.


    • Construction Began: May 2001
