What's Being Done

Currently, Jefferson Davis Highway from Chesterman Avenue to Decatur Street is a 6-lane divided highway with non-standard lane widths and non-standard turn lane configurations. This project will widen the existing highway in order to provide standard 12-foot wide lanes and dedicated turning lanes.

Why is this road being built?

This widening project is in agreement with the VDOT Six-Year Improvement Program and the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission’s 2023 Transportation Plan. The Year 2001 traffic volume was approximately 26,000 vehicles on a typical weekday. By the Year 2029, it is anticipated that the number of vehicles per day will increase to approximately 41,000 vehicles per day.

Benefits

The proposed widening will improve traffic operations and safety along this segment of Jefferson Davis Highway and connecting streets.
