Construction began in May 2014. The speed limit has been reduced within the entire work zone to 60 mph. For maximum safety, VDOT typically reduces speed limits for the entire project length needed during construction.
The pre-construction speed limit will be restored in spring 2016.
What's Being Done
Interstate 64 was widened from four lanes to six lanes eastbound from Route 623 to Route 271 (Pouncey Tract Road) and westbound from Route 271 (Pouncey Tract Road) to Route 622. The additional through lanes were constructed to the inside of existing I-64 in both directions.
The I-64/Route 623 interchange improvements included upgrading the existing traffic signal, widening the westbound I-64 off ramp to Route 623 to provide an additional turn lane, widening the I-64 eastbound off ramp to Route 623 to provide an additional turn lane and adding a left turn lane on Route 623 south to I-64 east.
A design hearing was held Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Centerville Company 3 Fire Station, 52 Broad Street, Manakin-Sabot, VA 23103
