About the Project
This project will extend the left turn lanes for Route 28 Southbound to I-66 Eastbound. Crews will demolish the raised median on the bridge, adjust the drainage and upgrade the median to VDOT standards.
VDOT’s NRO Traffic Engineering Section developed near-term, low-cost solutions to the safety problems associated with severe traffic congestion on Route 28.
An analysis of the before and after conditions showed that overall congestion dramatically improved saving over four minutes per vehicle during both the morning and afternoon peaks. Also, during an 8-month study period, there was a 40 percent reduction in traffic crashes in this area.
The $4.1 million project has started and is scheduled to be completed in May 2014.
