What's Being Done

This project involved water main relocation and and an upgrade to water facilities owned by Fairfax Water and the City of Falls Church. A new water main was installed for Fairfax Water along Gallows Road and east of Gallows Road (Route 29), and another water main installed for the City of Falls Church along Route 29 from west to east. The water main crossing Rt. 29 and the water main crossing Gallows Road was open cut.

The project replaced an old system in risk of cracking, requiring traffic detours and stoppage of water supply until the pipe would be repaired. This will also prepare a new roadway for construction with minor utility relocation.

Once the work is complete, improvements to Gallows Road and Route 29 can begin.

Project Updates

Survey work on Gallows Road north of Lee Highway is in progress.  Location balls that assist with providing information for utilities on location, elevation and underground type are being programmed. The contractor has installed the 24-inch water main along South Gallows Road to within 100 feet of Route 29, and is waiting for test confirmation on where the utilities are located.

In July the contractor will start the 16-inch water main along Westbound Route 29.

Traffic Impacts

Though most of the pipe is located off of the roadway, lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as occasional night  closures for roadway crossings are being done as needed. Lane closures throughout the weekend are permitted.

Starting in June, the contractor will have nighttime lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. near the Route 29/Gallows Road intersection for open cutting the road to install new water mains through late July.

Environmental Considerations

There has been ongoing cleanup of underground storage tanks and contaminated soils within the project limits. Any contaminated water encountered during excavation for the water main will be handled and processed properly for disposal.
