About the Project
To help reduce congestion and increase safety along westbound I-66 inside the Capital Beltway, this project extended the existing acceleration lane from the Fairfax Drive on-ramp (just west of George Mason Drive) to the existing deceleration lane at the Sycamore Street off-ramp (almost 2 miles).
The westbound acceleration and deceleration lane between Fairfax Drive and Sycamore Street were lengthened to form a continuous auxiliary lane between the two ramps. A new 12-foot-wide shoulder was constructed with full-strength pavement capable of carrying traffic during emergencies.
The work also included: sight distance improvements, variable and static message signs, traffic management systems, roadway lighting and landscaping in selected areas. All work will be performed within the existing right-of-way.
Future spot improvements, not part of this contract, are planned between Haycock Road and Westmoreland Street, and between Lee Highway and Glebe Road.
