Hunter Station Road over Snakeden Branch
|Temporary bridge replacement in Fairfax County|
Project at a Glance
Note: The temporary bridge opened to traffic on September 6, 2013. The entire project was completed on December 30, 2013.
About the Project
Hunter Station Road links Lawyers Road and Hunter Mill Road in Fairfax and carries about 600 vehicles per day. This project removed the existing bridge over Snakeden Branch and installed a pre-fabricated temporary bridge under an emergency contract.
The steel-beam and timber-deck bridge carried a single lane of traffic and was built in 1986. Inspections in 2012 revealed steel beam corrosion, and it was posted with a six-ton weight limit in July 2012. This restriction impacted school transportation as buses could not cross the bridge.
The temporary bridge continues to carry a single lane but has no weight restriction. The bridge is expected to be in place until funds for a permanent bridge are available. The approximate cost of a permanent bridge is about $3 million.
