Braddock Road and Pleasant Valley Road
|Roundabout in western Fairfax County|
Project at a Glance
About the Project
This design/build project constructed a roundabout at the intersection of Braddock Road (Route 620) and Pleasant Valley Road (Route 609) in Fairfax County.
The roundabout replaced the four-way stop that saw significant backups and delays during the morning and afternoon rush hours. It increased the intersection’s capacity for forecasted traffic volumes, and improved safety by eliminating the potential for turn or angle crashes at the intersection.
The roundabout at Braddock and Pleasant Valley also enhanced pedestrian access with crosswalks and curb ramps, and it tied into the existing trail along the east side of Pleasant Valley Road, south of the intersection. New drainage structures installed with the project also bring major relief to areas that accumulated high water during heavy rains. Crews also relocated utilities, added landscaping and lighting.
As of 2012, about 7500 vehicles per day travelled this section of Braddock Road and about 8500 travelled along Pleasant Valley Road.
During weekday peak hours, the intersection experienced substantial congestion, operating at full capacity with extensive backups on Braddock Road eastbound in the mornings and westbound in the evenings. The congestion results in severe delays, causing the intersection to operate at a service level of “F” (failing) during peak periods.
Design took into account parkland, commercial property, an Agricultural-Forestal District, wetlands, rare habitats, and significant overhead utility poles.
