About the Project
This project extended Atlantic Boulevard from Church Road to Magnolia Road. The new section of road, almost a half-mile long, completed Atlantic Boulevard, providing a continuous road parallel to Route 28 from Sterling Road (Route 846) north to Route 7.
The project features four lanes, a raised median, an asphalt multi-purpose trail on the east, a concrete sidewalk on the west, and a single-span bridge over the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail with connections to the trail.
Although it was constructed under the Route 28 PPTA design-build contract, the extension was state-funded and will be maintained by VDOT. The project opened to traffic in late 2011, with final completion in spring 2012.
The total cost, including preliminary engineering, right of way, utilities and construction was $24 million.
