Each summer, VDOT must decide which roads will be resurfaced during the upcoming year. Contracts are awarded to contractors in the late fall and winter, and paving work takes place once conditions are appropriate, usually April to November. 

With limited funding available, roads in need of treatment must be prioritized. The appropriate treatment must be selected to address needs on as many roads as possible. 

VDOT rates pavement conditions on primary roads throughout the state every year and the ratings are used to determine the type of treatment to apply to pavement. Treatments are chosen based upon a variety of factors, including the current pavement condition, ride quality and the volume of traffic a road carries. 

While a road may not look deficient to the casual observer, testing of roadway samples can reveal developing problems. 

For secondary routes, which include subdivision streets, local VDOT maintenance staff perform "road rides" each spring and summer and methodically travel routes under their jurisdiction. Roads in need of repair are inventoried and reviewed. 

As funds become available each year, maintenance staff develop a list of secondary routes most in need of repair in the coming year. Based upon the road's condition, the maintenance staff recommends the most appropriate treatment to address the deterioration. 

When can I expect work to begin on my street? 

Exact work dates for individual locations are not usually available more than 10 days in advance of the start of work. Contractors set their schedules based upon the availability of personnel and equipment. 

What are the hours of operation? 

Work hours are generally limited to weekdays between dawn and dusk. 

What will take place?

Residents will see equipment in their neighborhoods during projects and can anticipate temporary traffic pattern changes. Brief removal of vehicles, as well as obstructions such as basketball hoops or garbage cans, from the street may be required so work can be accomplished. 

Contractors are required to post "no parking" signs a minimum of 3 business days in advance of work along roads where on-street parking will be prohibited during paving.
