Dominion Boulevard Improvements
Project at a Glance
This city administered project will widen Dominion Boulevard from two lanes to a four-lane, divided, limited access freeway from south of Cedar Road to the Oak Grove Interchange. The project also includes replacing the existing bascule bridge over the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River with a high-rise fixed bridge and adding at-grade separated interchanges at Cedar Road, relocated Bainbridge Road and Great Bridge Boulevard.
Construction activities have begun on this project. The installation of concrete piles, footings, columns and caps is progressing for the new northbound bridge span over the Elizabeth River. Excavation and road construction continues for road widening, access roads and interchanges. The Blake Street/Byron Street pedestrian tunnel is closed until the summer of 2014. The intersections Pine Wood Run and Mullen Road intersections with Dominion Boulevard are permanently closed. The ramp from Route 168 North to southbound Dominion Boulevard (Exit 15B to 17 South) is closed from June 4, 2013 to June 4, 2015, for the construction of the Great Bridge Boulevard Interchange.
