Route 620 (Harrison Road) and Route 639 (Leavells Road) Signal Modification and Median Closure
Project at a Glance
Construction on a median and turn lane improvement project will begin in January at the intersection of Route 639 (Leavells Road) and Route 620 (Harrison Road) in Spotsylvania County.
Motorists should be prepared for overnight lane closures, construction activity and temporary traffic patterns at the intersection through April 2015, when the project will be completed.
The left turn lane on northbound Leavells Road will be lengthened to hold additional vehicles. After construction is finished, only protected left turns on a green arrow signal will be permitted from northbound Leavells Road onto westbound Harrison Road.
Medians will be installed on each intersection approach to separate traffic traveling in opposite directions.
New traffic signal equipment will be installed to accommodate the new traffic pattern.
At the end of the construction, new pavement and lane markings will be applied throughout the intersection.
Extended Left Turn Lane Open: April 2015
An extended left turn lane on northbound Leavells Road opened to traffic the week of April 13-17, 2015.
Only protected left turns on a green arrow signal are now permitted from northbound Leavells Road onto westbound Harrison Road, and from southbound Salem Church Road onto eastbound Harrison Road.
The median crossover on Leavells Road at Route 1474 (Griffith Way) closest to the intersection was closed. Access to Griffith Way was maintained at a second crossover.
