Project Details

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is reducing the number of through lanes on Route 3 over a 0.4 mile segment of roadway in the Hartfield area of Middlesex County, and will create a new center turn lane.

Route 3 will be reduced from 4 through lanes to 2 lanes between Regent Road and Twiggs Ferry Road.

VDOT is also adding a center turn lane that can be shared by eastbound and westbound traffic.

Referred to as a “road diet,” the slimmed-down number of through lanes is designed to encourage motorists to travel at uniform speeds. The reduction also provides space to add a 4 foot shoulder to the roadway for bicyclists and make right turns into driveways easier.

Beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, VDOT will start to resurface the pavement and re-stripe lane markings. Work is expected to take two weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Motorists will encounter single-lane closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each Wednesday and Thursday, with a flagging crew directing traffic through the work zone.
