Project Overview

Construction is starting July 19, 2017, to extend an existing right turn lane on Route 301 northbound in King George County near the Gate B entrance to Naval Support Activity South Potomac at Dahlgren.

Lengthening the turn lane adds more storage space for vehicles turning right onto Bennion Road, and reduces congestion in the Route 301 through traffic lanes.

The $730,000 project will be completed by November 15, 2017. The project contractor is Arthur Construction Co., Inc.

All lanes of Route 301 northbound will remain open at peak travel times during construction.

On weekdays, no lane closures are allowed between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, no lane closures are allowed between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

At other times, travelers can expect periodic single lane closures.

Message boards will be posted along Route 301 to notify drivers of the upcoming project.

Drivers are encouraged to stay alert in the work zone for temporary traffic patterns and the presence of workers and slow-moving equipment.

King George County submitted an application to build this project through Virginia’s SMART SCALE transportation funding program.
