Design Public Hearing
VDOT held a design public hearing for this project in April 2014:
Several projects are underway to improve traffic signal operations and traffic flow along Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway) in Gloucester County between the George P. Coleman Bridge and the Route 17/Route 17 Business (Main Street) Intersection.
Traffic Signal System Upgrades
This project is upgrading six existing traffic signals over 12.8 miles to add communication and detection systems for signal coordination.
Signals will be upgraded at Route 17 and the following intersections: Route 616, Route 14/17 Business/Route 619, Hospital Drive/McFadden Way, Route 606, Route 33/Route 198, and Route 14/17 and Route 3/14.
Traffic Signal Coordination
This project is coordinating traffic signals along Route 17 between the Coleman Bridge and Route 17/17 Business (Main Street) to improve the efficiency of traffic flow and reduce congestion.
- New equipment will allow for remote traffic control along this hurricane evacuation route
- Seeks to reduce driver delays through more efficient signal timing and coordination
