Construction Update

Beginning Thursday, Jan. 14, traffic will be restricted to one lane controlled by temporary signals at the Route 688 bridge over Thumb Run.

(The traffic pattern change was originally scheduled for Dec. 10 but was postponed due to a problem with timing of the temporary traffic signals.)

Temporary signals and other traffic-control devices will be installed to accommodate construction. The contractor will work in phases to maintain a single travel lane throughout construction, working first on the southbound half of the bridge.

Motorists should remain alert for new signs and traffic controls as well as workers and equipment near the travel lanes.

Project Purpose

The primary purpose of this project is to replace the substandard Route 688 (Leeds Manor Road) bridge over Thumb Run in Fauquier County. The existing concrete-slab bridge was built in 1925.

What Is Proposed?

VDOT proposes to construct a new two-lane, prestressed concrete slab bridge in place of the existing bridge. The proposed bridge will be 54 feet long and 26 feet wide.

Located approximately 350 feet south of the bridge, an additional structure that spans the tributary of Thumb Run is proposed to be replaced with a new 20 by 47 ft. concrete box culvert.

Based on comments received at the 2013 public hearings, the bridge replacement will be done in phases with a single travel lane maintained throughout construction. A signal will control two-way traffic through the work zone.

Construction began in late summer 2015, with a July 2016 completion date.

Approximately 580 vehicles use Route 688 daily, according to a 2011 traffic count.
