Project Purpose
To provide safer pedestrian facilities along Route 656 (Georgetown Road) between Hydraulic Road and Barracks Road. The corridor is a well-developed residential area with a high volume mix of pedestrians, bicyclists, vehicles and buses.
In addition to the recreational users of the existing path and sidewalk along Georgetown Road a substantial number of students use the path to walk to several Albemarle County public schools located a short distance north on Hydraulic Road.
Improving safety for pedestrians crossing Georgetown Road has been identified as a concern of area residents and will be addressed as part of this project. Previous spot improvements, including turn lanes and intermittent improvements to the existing pedestrian facilities, have been made along the roadway but a comprehensive project to provide a continuous concrete sidewalk along the entire length of the road has not yet been completed.
What is Proposed?
The existing asphalt pedestrian pathway on the west side of Georgetown Road will be replaced by a five-foot wide concrete sidewalk and curb and gutter. Four marked pedestrian crossings will be added at identified locations along the length of Georgetown Road.
