VDOT completed work on this project on May 11, 2017. The project involved extending the service life of the Interstate 64 bridge over Route 781 by milling and patching the bridge decks and applying a latex overlay.
To reduce delays during the single-lane weekend closures, VDOT implemented the zipper merge pattern to reduce delays.
About 18,000 vehicles travel each direction of I-64 on a weekend day. To help reduce delays for these motorists, VDOT will implement a zipper merge pattern when congestion begins to occur.
Rather than merging at the first “lane closed” sign, drivers should stay in their current travel lane up to the merge point and take turns merging — similar to a zipper — into the open lane. When traffic is heavy, this merge method has been shown to reduce backups and keeps traffic flowing through the work zone.
