VDOT contractor Burleigh Construction Inc. has begun working on the Route 230 (Wolftown-Hood Road) bridge over the Rapidan River in Madison County and the Route 15 (James Madison Highway) bridge over Carys Creek in Fluvanna County.
Two-way traffic is being controlled by temporary traffic signals on Route 230 in Madison County and Route 15 in Fluvanna County.
The temporary signals will be in place throughout the bulk of the work. Use caution approaching the bridges while traffic adjusts to the new traffic patterns and expect delays.
Under a $1.2 million construction contract, crews will rehabilitate the riding surface and the bridge abutments and piers to extend the surface life of both bridges.
Construction on both bridges is expected to be complete by Dec. 22, 2017.
The Rapidan River bridge in Madison County carries 3,200 vehicles per day, and about 5,100 vehicles use the Cary's Creek bridge in Fluvanna County daily, according to 2016 traffic counts.
