Access was closed from Frontage Route 1077 (Marsh Road) to Route 17 southbound on Dec. 2, 2016. Major GPS providers have been contacted to revise their maps and routing.
VDOT staff continue to monitor operation of the new traffic pattern, and will be making adjustments to the Opal traffic signal timing as conditions normalize over the next several weeks.
To improve safety and traffic flow, VDOT will close off access to Route 17 southbound from the signalized intersection by constructing a U-turn facility. Through traffic will instead use the loop ramp to access Route 17 southbound.
Local access to commercial and residential entrances will be maintained, and Route 17 northbound traffic will not be restricted.
The week of Nov. 14, a VDOT crew will construct the U-turn, located near Pomeroy Lane, a private road. No work is planned from Nov. 21 to 28 to avoid disruption to Thanksgiving travel.
On the morning of Dec. 2, the roadway will be re-striped, and motorists should expect the closure to take effect before the afternoon rush hour. (The effective date was originally Tuesday, Nov. 29, but was postponed due to inclement weather. See news release below.)
In December 2013, VDOT completed construction of the Opal interchange loop ramp at Route 15/17/29 and Route 17 in Fauquier County, and subsequently added pavement markings and highway signs and updated traffic signal timing to improve traffic operations in the area.
However, Route 15/17/29 southbound traffic continues to turn left at the signal rather than use the loop ramp to reach Route 17 southbound, causing backups in the left-turn lane that spill over into the through lanes, especially during the afternoon commute and on weekends. This congestion has led to an increase in rear-end and side-swipe crashes at the intersection.
