What's Being Done

Due to reconstruction of a half-mile section of Route 83 (Lover’s Gap) in Buchanan County, a section of the route will close Thursday, June 6 and will remain closed for three months.

The closure will be from .2 mile west of Route 718 to .8 mile east of Route 718 in Buchanan County.

By closing Route 83 approximately three months, VDOT could potentially lessen the length of construction by at least six months.  Closing the route allows the contractor to use heavier pieces of equipment for excavation, saving time as well as money in the construction bidding process.

The detour for trucks during construction is approximately 15 miles and uses Routes 744, 604 and Route 460.  The detour for cars is approximately nine miles and uses Routes 744, 604, 615 and Route 460.

The project costs are approximately $16 million, including preliminary engineering, right of way acquisition and construction.

This project includes connecting to new Route 744 that leads to the county’s redevelopment site.

The Route 83 project will be completed November 2014.
