Work Zone Safety

Statistics
Four out of five of the people who die in work zone crashes are motorists, not highway workers.
In 2006, there were 17 work zone fatalities and 1,098 injuries. The chart below provides comparisons with previous years. It's important to note that the crash report form used by the Virginia State Police starting in 2004 included a new, broader definition of a work zone than had been used previously.
The new report also makes it easier to identify the crash as a work zone crash on the form, hence the significant increase in the number of crashes and injuries in 2004 on vs. previous years.
