STAUNTON – (5:30 a.m.) The Virginia Department of Transportation warns of possible icy patches Saturday morning on some roads in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. Winter weather advisories are in effect for the entire region with freezing rain or sleet expected. These conditions can create dangerous black ice on roadways, and motorists should not drive when ice is present.

As of 5:30 a.m. Saturday, minor conditions are reported on primary and secondary roads in Shenandoah County. VDOT has mobilized 350 to 400 crews and contractors throughout the 11-county Staunton District. They will treat roads with salt and abrasives as needed until temperatures are well above freezing.

For continually updated winter weather road conditions go to www.511Virginia.org, look at the orange bar on the top of the page and click on “Text Views” and then click on “Road Condition Table”. A pull-down menu allows individual counties to be viewed.
