TRAFFIC ALERT FOR MAY 23 - 27, 2016
Highway Work Zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY    

INTERSTATE 64

(UPDATE) Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Watch for crews removing debris and trimming trees at various locations;  cleaning round box culverts, drain pipes and ditches between mile markers 16 and 26. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Mile marker 2 to 4 and Exit 1 off-ramp, eastbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations May 14 to 27, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mile marker 10 to 7 including Exit 7 off-ramp, westbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations through May 21, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mile marker 36 to 34 including Exit 35 off-ramp, westbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations through June 17, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 159 (Dunlap Creek Road) – Traffic lanes restricted to 8 feet 6 inches on temporary bridge during roadway alignment project for box culvert replacement over Crow Run.  Project will also use temporary traffic signals. Work zone is 0.45 mile west of Route 717 to 0.55 mile west of Route 17.  Commercial vehicles can use Route 18 as an alternate route. Estimated completion September.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY                                                                                                                   

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris. Cleaning paved ditches and drop inlets between mile marker 53 and 51. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.     

Mile marker 53 to 55, eastbound and westbound – Be alert to a recent change in traffic pattern:  Westbound traffic will taper to a single lane and use a median crossover to access the eastbound side of the interstate. After crossing the bridge, westbound drivers will follow a second crossover to return to the I-64 westbound mainline. Eastbound traffic throughout the work zone will be limited to the right lane.  Work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour.  Estimated project completion summer 2017.

Exit 56, eastboundDaily left lane closure to I-81 (mile marker 195) northbound for bridge work. Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Estimated completion May 30.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 174 to 205, northbound and southbound – Crews removing debris, cleaning paved ditches and trimming trees at various locations, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cleaning box culverts and drain pipes between mile markers 177 to 179, Tuesday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

PRIMARY ROADS

Main Street, City of Lexington – Construction at VMI will affect motorists on north side of Main Street, May 17 through June 21. All work impacting traffic is nighttime work, which will close one lane of Main Street with the exception of June 14 (estimated), which will close both lanes. Flaggers will assist traffic flow during nighttime work closures.

(UPDATE) Route 60 at Beech Avenue – Single lane closure for pavement marking from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m. Estimated completion May 25.

Route 60 (Fredericksburg Road) Shoulder closures for utility installation beginning at the old Highland Belle School. The work will involve areas under the ramps on the east side of Route 60 and under I-64, and along east side of Route 623 (Fredericksburg Road) to 0.22 miles north of the I-64 ramp.

(NEW) Various roads – Contractor mowing crews with mobile operation.  Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Various roads – Ditching, brush cutting, pavement work, pipe replacement, shoulder maintenance and pothole repairs. Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.

Route 708 (Gilmore’s Mill Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement at Cedar Creek just east of Route 608 (Shafer Lane). Detour using Route 608 and Route 130 (Wert Faulkner Highway).  Estimated completion November 2016.

(NEW) Various roads – Contractor mowing crews with mobile operation.  Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 94 to 107, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion June 17.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, trimming trees and cleaning paved ditches, drop inlets, box culverts and drain pipes at various locations.   Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 230 to 237, southbound – Right shoulder closures for Shentel utility work. Monday to Friday.

Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Right shoulder closures for utility work from Route 613 (Spring Hill Road) to Route 728 (Stover Shop Road). Monday to Friday.

Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound lane closure/lane shifts from Staunton city limits to Route 1427 (Rowe Road) for utility work. 

(UPDATE) Route 254 (Parkersburg Turnpike) – Flagger controlled single lane closures as needed and intermittent shoulder closures from North Shillings Trail to Route 708 (Miss Phillips Road). Monday to Friday.

(UPDATE) Route 340 (Rosser Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion June 17.

Route 340 (Main Street, Waynesboro) – Road closed  between Constitution Park and East Avenue for replacement of South River bridge. Through traffic will use Broad Street (Route 250) as detour route. Local traffic has access to all businesses and residences throughout the project. Estimated completion December 2017.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 604 (McClures Mill Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for surface treatment from Route 675 to Route 701.  Monday through Friday.  Estimated completion May 27.

(NEW) Intersection Route 607/Route 843 – Daytime, flagger controlled traffic at the intersection in the Moscow area during installation of box culvert. Monday through Thursday, May 31through June 22.

Route 608 – Flagger controlled lane closure 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for surface treatment from Augusta/Rockbridge County Line to Route 666 (Lofton Road). Monday through Friday. Estimated completion May 27.

Route 613 – Flagger controlled lane closure 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for surface treatment from Route 871 (Cochrans Mill Road) to Route 1063 (Greenville Farm Lane).  Monday through Friday. Estimated completion May 27.

(UPDATE) Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue) – Shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion June 17.

NEW) Route 641(Fishersville Road) – Intermittent lane and shoulder closures from Route 608 (Long Meadow Road) to Route 1360 (Westminster Drive) for water line upgrades. Monday to Friday.   

Route 685 (Lehigh Road, Craigsville) – Road closed for bridge replacement over Little Calfpasture River between Route 684 and Route 42. Detour in place. Estimated completion December 2016.  

Route 872 – Flagger controlled lane closure 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for surface treatment from Route 693 (Stingy Hollow Road) to Route 613 (Old Greenville Road).  Monday through Friday. Estimated completion May 27.

(NEW) Route 876 (Swoope Road) – Road closed 24/7 for box culvert replacement between Route 860 (Waldrop Road) and Route 703 (Hewitt Road). May 23 to June 3.  Follow posted detours.

Route 876 – Flagger controlled lane closure 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for surface treatment from Route 619 (Hildebrand Church Road) to Route 612 (Crimora Road). Monday through Friday. Estimated completion May 27.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 245 to 237, southbound – Right shoulder closures for fiber optic installation. Monday to Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Replacement of North River bridge.  Watch for traffic shifts, right shoulder closures and flagger controlled intermittent lanes closures, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Work zone from Route 694 to one mile south of Mount Crawford.  Variable message boards and pavement markings direct motorists. Estimated completion July 2017.

Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Periodic flagging for tree removal and pipe installation as part of intersection improvements at Route 340 (East Side Highway).  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated completion October.  

Route 340 (East Side Highway) – Periodic flagging for tree removal and pipe installation as part of intersection improvements at Route 253/659  (Port Republic Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated completion October.

(NEW) Route 748 (Thomas Spring Road) – Bridge over Spring Creek temporarily restricted to vehicles of six tons or less. Location is 0.1 mile east of Route 613 (Spring Creek Road).

Route 211, westbound –Single lane closure 24/7 for bridge deck repairs over Shenandoah River between Route 646 and Route 615. Estimated completion June 3.

Route 340 Business – Flagger controlled lane closure for paving operations from Route 614 (Shuler Lane) to west of Route 622 (Pond Avenue).  7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion May 27.

Speed limit of 60 miles per hour throughout the work zone until completion of the exit 310 construction project. Limited space for traffic to merge onto southbound I-81 due to on-ramp shoulder closures.  Motorists should also be alert for trucks entering and exiting work zone.  Estimated project completion May 2018.

(NEW) Route 11 (Martinsburg Pike) – Turn lane from northbound Route 11 onto I-81 southbound on-ramp restricted to 10-foot widths, May 23-26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Restriction is for drainage repairs and replacement of curbs and gutters.

(UPDATE) Route 37, southboundOff-ramp at Winchester Medical Center closed for interchange reconstruction.  Southbound Route 37 drivers can use Route 50 to access the medical center.  Estimated completion May 27.

Route 37 at I-81 Exit 310 (Kernstown Interchange), northbound and southbound Be alert for construction activity at exit 310 interchange and intersections of Tasker Road (Route 642) and Hillandale Drive (Route 847). Part of interchange reconstruction scheduled for completion in May 2018.

(NEW) Route 704 (Back Creek Road) – Closed from Route 683 (Rock Enon Springs Road) to 0.3 miles north of Route 683 for a pipe replacement from May 23 to 25.  Detour in place 24 hours a day.
Route 847 (Hillandale Lane, Kernstown Interchange) – Northbound 24/7 right shoulder closures from existing intersection with Route 37 to 0.31 miles north of intersection as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project. Work performed Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated project completion May 2018.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 55 (Strasburg Road) – Intersection modification at Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Temporary traffic signal at 55/340/522 intersection, and lane shift from 340/522 to Forest Hill Drive. Changes in effect through summer 2016 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road) – South Fork bridge replacement and intersection modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road).  Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly.  Lane shift at 17th street and temporary traffic signal at 340/522/55 intersection, placing all traffic on the newly constructed bridge. 18th street is open to traffic, with left turn restrictions until summer 2017.  Estimated project completion December 2017.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 624 (Morgan Ford Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement over the Shenandoah River. Work zone from Route 643 (Howellsville Road) to Route 661 (Fairground Road).  Detours:  Drivers south of the bridge will turn right on Route 643 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then to Route 638 in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn left on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) and left on Route 624 (Red Gate Road/Milldale Road) to reach the end of the detour. Drivers north of the bridge will follow Route 624 (Milldale Road/Red Gate Road) north and turn right on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn right on Route 638 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then Route 643, to reach the end of the detour.  Estimated project completion June 2018.

Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) – Flagger traffic control for bridge painting operations, 7 days a week, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Estimated completion June 3.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
