TRAFFIC ALERT FOR JUNE 15 TO JUNE 19, 2015
Highway Work Zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY  

 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 16.56 to 9.6, westbound – Milling, paving and pavement marking operations. Sunday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., but could periodically extend to 24/7 operations.  

(NEW) Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Possible lane closures for mowing and litter pickup.  Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures for pothole patching. Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal, clearing sign areas, cleaning bridge ditches and slopes. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 696 (Selma-Low Moor Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement, June 22 until July 2. Work zone between Route 1302 (Sugar Maple Drive) and Route 1309 (Crossing Lane).  Home and business owners will have access to their properties. Passenger vehicle detour:  Drivers westbound on Route 696 turn left onto Route 1309 (Crossing Lane), right onto Route 1316 (Vassar Street), right onto Route 1302 (Sugar Maple Drive) and then left back onto Route 696. Drivers eastbound turn right onto Route 1302 (Sugar Maple Drive), left onto Route 1316 (Vassar Street), and then left onto Route 1309 (Crossing Lane) back to Route 696. Truck traffic detour: Eastbound drivers from the Rich Patch area should use Route 615 (Blue Spring Run Road) to Route 18 (Potts Creek Road) to Route 60 (West Midland Trail) to Interstate 64. Westbound truck traffic trying to access the Rich Patch Area will travel Route 60 to I-64 to Route 18 (Potts Creek Road) to Route 615 (Blue Spring Run).  Estimated completion July 2, 2015.

INTERSTATE 64

(UPDATE) Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal and cleaning paved ditches, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 42 to 41, westbound – Single lane closures for machine cleaning ditches. Wednesday, June 17, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 53.3 to 55.3, eastbound and westbound.  Eastbound traffic will detour across the median to the westbound side of the interstate. Both directions of traffic will use westbound Maury River bridge until late 2015 while the eastbound bridge undergoes rehabilitation. Speed limit is 55 miles per hour.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 173 to 205.1, northbound and southbound – Be alert for mowing and litter pickup Sunday to Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; debris removal Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and cleaning paved ditches Tuesday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.   

(UPDATE) Mile marker 185.9 to 195.3, northbound – Alternating lane closures Sunday, June 14, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Monday through Friday through June 26 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Shoulder-only closures Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. – Guardrail work and paving operations. 

(NEW) Mile marker 205 to 174, northbound and southbound – Single lane closures as needed for mowing. Sunday, June 14, to Wednesday, June 17, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  

Exit 205, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures as needed for I-81 bridge maintenance over Route 606 (Raphine Road).  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion June 26, 2015.

Mile marker 94 to 107, eastbound and westbound – Left and right shoulder closures, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday for installation of traffic-management system in the Afton Mountain area. Estimated completion Sept. 28, 2015. 

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, cleaning bridge slopes, paved ditches and drop inlets. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.    

(NEW) Mile marker 234.4, northbound – Nighttime lane closures for asphalt repairs, Monday, June 15, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, June 16.

Route 42 (Little Calf Pasture Highway) – Flagger-controlled traffic for shoulder and guardrail improvements from Route 254 in Buffalo Gap area to Route 685 at Craigsville. Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion June 26, 2015.

Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge over White Oak Draft. Work zone is about 0.5 mile west of Route 728.  Estimated project completion Jan. 29, 2016.

Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) – Restricted to single lane with temporary traffic signals during replacement of bridge over Calfpasture River. Work zone is just east of Route 715 (Braley Pond Road).  Estimated project completion March 2016.

(NEW) Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) – Potential 15-minute traffic stoppages for signal work at intersection with I-64 eastbound ramps. Tuesday, June 16, 7 p.m. to midnight.  Continuing shoulder closures and occasional flagging operations for road-widening project between Route 636 and Route 635.

(UPDATE) Route 340 – Right shoulder closures at various locations for fiber optic installation from Route 11/Greenville to the Augusta/Rockingham County Line.  Estimated completion June 19.

Route 340/635 Intersection– Lane shifts and shoulder closures for gas line installation on northbound shoulder.  Estimated completion Oct. 23, 2015.

Route 340 & Route 1512 (Gloucester Road, Stuarts Draft)Right lane and shoulder closures through July 3 for utility work.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 608 (Tinkling Springs Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for intersection improvements at Route 608/635 intersection.  Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion Dec. 15, 2015.

(NEW) Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike Road/Sherando) – Road closed June 15 to July 3 for installation of box culvert over tributary to Back Creek.  Work zone is between Route 855 (Mill Creek Lane) and Route 664 (Mount Torey Road).  Residents will be able to get to their property during this work.  Detours: Eastbound drivers will turn northwest on Route 634 (China Clay Road), northeast on Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road), east on Route 664 (Nursery Road) and then south on Route 664 (Mount Torrey Road) to the end of the detour. Westbound drivers will turn north on Route 664 (Mount Torrey Road), west on Route 664 (Nursery Road), southwest on Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road) and then southeast on Route 634 (China Clay Road) to the end of the detour. Estimated project completion July 3, weather permitting.

Route 620 (Pisgah Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed near Route 252 for bridge work over Naked Creek.  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion June 26, 2015.

Route 635 (Augusta Farms Road/Ramsey Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for intersection improvements at Route 608/635 intersection. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Estimated completion Dec. 15, 2015.

Route 636 (Lifecore Drive) – Shoulder closures and occasional flagging operations for road widening west of Route 285.

(UPDATE) Route 640(Goose Creek Road) closed for paving, grading and utility work. Monday, June 15 to Wednesday, June 17, between Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) and Route 630 (Caldwell Lane). Follow posted detour signs.
Route 801 (Hangers Mill Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) and Route 835 (Hotchkiss Road) for bridge replacement. Traffic will follow the posted detour. Local traffic will have access during construction. Estimated completion October 2015.
Route 847 (Valley Church Road) – Road closed through June 24 for pipe replacement over wet weather stream. This closure is a weekday/daytime only closure. The work zone is 0.2 mile west of Route 771 (Airport Road) to 0.3 mile east of Route 773 (Virginia Mills Road).  Detours are in place:  Drivers approaching from the east will go east on Route 847 (Valley Church Road), then north onto Route 771 (Airport Road), and then west onto Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road), and then south onto Route 773 (Virginia Mills Road), then back onto Route 847 (Valley Church Road).  Drivers approaching from the west will go west on 847 (Valley Church Road) and then north on Route773 (Virginia Mills Road), then east onto Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road), then south onto Route 771 (Airport Road), then west back onto Route 847.
Route 994 (Dices Spring Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure and right shoulder closure as needed for bridge work over Naked Creek.  Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion June 26, 2015.

Route 340 (Town of Elkton) – Periodic flagger-controlled lane closures for sidewalk and road improvements. Work zone from F Street to 0.18 miles south of East Street.  Monday through Friday.  Estimated completion Sept. 18, 2015.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 704 (Boyers Road) – Travel lane shift about 0.4 mile south of Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) due to earth-moving work for Southeast Connector project.  This traffic pattern will remain in place 24/7 until connector road opens. 

(UPDATE) Route 815 (Hollow Road, Fulks Run area) – Road closed until June 19 between Route 612 and Route 814 for box culvert replacement over tributary to the North Fork of the Shenandoah River.  A “stop and proceed” detour will be in place 24/7 until work is complete.

(NEW) Route 758 (7 Fountains Road-Fort Valley area) – Road closure beginning Monday, June 15 for bridge replacement over Passage Creek, 0.7 miles from southern intersection with Route 678 (Fort Valley Road). Local traffic can access properties north of bridge by approaching from northern intersection of Routes 758/678. Estimated completion May 2016.

(NEW) Mile marker 309 to 311 (near Winchester), northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for shoulder widening as part of the exit 310 interchange modification project. Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning, and Friday from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following morning.  Northbound and southbound left shoulders closed 24/7 from 0.51 miles south to 0.55 miles north of interchange.

(NEW) Mile marker 317 to 313 (Winchester area), southbound – Overnight lane and on- and off- ramp closures for milling and paving as follows:  Monday, June 15 (7 p.m. to 5 a.m.) Deceleration lane and off-ramp closed at exit 315 (Route 7). Motorists can access Route 7 by continuing south to exit 313A and following I-81 northbound back to exit 315.  Tuesday, June 16 (7 p.m. to 5 a.m.) On-ramp and acceleration lane closed at exit 315 (Route 7). Motorists can access southbound I-81 by following I-81 northbound to exit 317, and then following Route 11 south to the on-ramp for southbound I-81. Wednesday, June 17 (7 p.m. to 5 a.m.) Deceleration lane and off-ramp at exit 313B (Route 17/50/522). Motorists can access these routes by continuing south to exit 310 and following I-81 northbound back to exit 313. Thursday, June 18 (7 p.m. to 5 a.m.) On-ramp and acceleration lane closed at exit 315 (Route 7). Motorists can access southbound I-81 by following I-81 northbound to exit 317, and then following Route 11 south to the on-ramp for southbound I-81. Monday, June 22 to Thursday, June 25 (7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day) Lane closures as needed for paving between mile markers 317 and 313. 

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Mulberry Street (Town of Stephens City) – Road closed June 15 to June 19, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., from Fairfax Pike (Route 277) south to Green Street for installation of utilities and pavement repair. Detour signs will be in place.  Estimated completion is June 19. 

Route 37 at I-81 Exit 310 (Kernstown Interchange), northbound and southbound Be alert for construction vehicles and related activities at exit 310 interchange and intersection with Tasker Road (Route 642) and Hillandale Drive (Route 847), as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project. Estimated project completion May 2018.

Route 522, northboundTemporary lane closures between Winchester city limits and Route 739 (Fox Drive) for the installation of utilities in the median.  Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.  Estimated completion July 1, 2015.

(NEW) Route 642 (Tasker Road, Kernstown Interchange) – Northbound right shoulder closures from Rt. 846 (Rutherford Lane) to intersection with Route 37.  Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and guardrail work, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated project completion  June 26, 2015.

Route 642 (Tasker Road, Kernstown Interchange),  Northbound 24/7 right shoulder closures from existing intersection with Route 37 to 0.44 miles south of intersection as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project. Estimated  project completion May 2018.   

(UPDATE) Route 669 (Rest Church Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Work zone from I-81south ramps for Rest Church Road from Route 11 (Martinsburg Pike) to Route 825 (Zachary Ann Lane) continuing to Route 661 (Welltown Road). Estimated completion July 2.

(UPDATE) Route 672 (Brucetown Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving, shoulder work and pavement marking , 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Work zone from Route 667 (Rocky Ford Road) to Route 668 (Shady Creek Road). Estimated completion June 24.

Lane width reduced to 12’ and height restriction of 13’ in place.  Work zone speed reduced to 30 mph.  Work zone is about 0.5 mile north and south of Route 605/601 intersection.  Estimated project completion August 1.

(UPDATE) Route 636 (Westwood Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving operations, shoulder stone and pavement marking June 15 to 17, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Work zone from Tom Whitacre Circle/West Main Street to Business Route 7.

WARREN COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 55 (Strasburg Road) – Intersection modification at Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Temporary traffic signal at 55/340/522 intersection, and lane shift from 340/522 to Forest Hill Drive. Changes in effect through December 2015 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

Route 55 (John Marshal Highway) – Flagger controlled traffic for bridge repairs 0.50 mile east of Route 79 (Apple Mountain Road).  Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated project completion June 19.

Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Lane shifts on north and south ends of the bridge replacement project over Gooney Creek. Access to Route 605 (Poor House Road) is temporarily closed. Follow posted detour signs. Work zone from 0.67 miles south of Route 605 to 0.35 miles north of Route 605. Estimated completion Oct. 2015.

(UPDATE) Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road) – South Fork bridge replacement and intersection modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Lane shift and temporary traffic signal at 340/522/55 intersection from north end of bridge to Duck Street. Lane shift and closure of center turn lane from south end of bridge to just south of 17th Street. Through traffic using 18th Street will detour onto North Royal Avenue and 17th Street.  Changes in effect through December 2015 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 605 (Poor House Road) – Road closure at intersection with Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) as part of the bridge construction over Gooney Creek. Closure remains in place until approximately late June when the new bridge opens to through traffic. Drivers who need access to Route 605 will detour onto Route 607 (Rocky Lane) east and Route 649 (Browntown Road) south to Route 605.

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.

 

Traffic alerts and traveler information can be obtained by dialing 511 and at 511Virginia.org. For other assistance call the VDOT Customer Service Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Dial 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623) from anywhere in the state to report road hazards, ask transportation questions, or get information related to Virginia’s roads.
