MULTI-VEHICLE ACCIDENT CLOSES ALL I-81 NORTHBOUND LANES IN RAPHINE AREA OF ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

STAUNTON – (4:15 p.m.) A multi-vehicle accident has closed both northbound lanes on Interstate 81 at mile marker 204 in the Raphine area of Rockbridge County.  This location is between exit 205 at Raphine and exit 200 at Fairfield.  This area is north of Lexington.

No estimated time of reopening has been provided by the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton Traffic Operations Center.

A tractor trailer is blocking both lanes and a wrecker is on-scene to help remove it from the travel lanes.  The tractor trailer will be moved to the side of the road  to allow the travel lanes to be reopened.  An operation to remove the tractor trailer from the interstate is scheduled for 10 p.m. tonight.

Traffic is backed up approximately seven miles.  Motorists should expect significant delays in this area. Traffic is being diverted off of I-81 at exit 200 onto Route 11.
