ALL I-81 NORTHBOUND LANES ARE CLOSED DURING SINKHOLE REPAIRS IN SHENANDOAH COUNTY

STAUNTON – (1:00 a.m.) All northbound lanes on Interstate 81 are being closed to allow crews to repair a sinkhole located at mile marker 284 in Shenandoah County. A detour is set up taking traffic off of I-81 at exit 277 near Bowmans Crossing, traveling onto Route 614 eastbound to Route 11 northbound to Route 651 westbound and back on I-81 at exit 291 in the Toms Brook area.

A contractor will excavate the sinkhole.  Once the excavation begins, the size of the hole and stability of the surrounding ground will be evaluated.  The sinkhole will be back-filled.  Once the sinkhole is repaired the road will be repaved at the repair site and then opened to traffic.

No estimated time of completion is established yet.

Motorists should expect significant traffic delays in this area.  Backups up to 11 miles have been reported in the area at various times on Sunday.

All work is weather permitting.
