TRAFFIC ALERT FOR JUNE 9 TO JUNE 13, 2014
Highway Work Zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

 

INTERSTATE 64

MILE marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westboundBe alert for crews removing debris, cleaning paved ditches and slopes. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

MILE marker 17 to 18, eastbound – Cleaning around storm water ponds. Tuesday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 42 – Mobile flagger traffic control for alternating lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. for pavement work.  Work zone extends from
I-64 east Ramp 29A at Route 632 to the Bath/Alleghany county line. Estimated completion December 2014.

Various roads – Mowing, patching and ditching with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 606 (Sioux Street, Clifton Forge) – Right shoulder closure with intermittent flagging for box culvert construction work under I-64.  Estimated completion June 15, 2015.

BATH COUNTY

 

PRIMARY ROADS

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 687 (Jackson River Turnpike) Flagger traffic control at various locations for bridge work over Cowardin Run. Work zone is 0.45 mile north of Route 618 to 0.55 miles north of Route 618.  Estimated completion Sept. 24, 2014.

Various roads – Mowing with a mobile operation. Patching and ditching with flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris,  cleaning paved ditches. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Mile marker 51.4 to 55.2 eastbound and mile marker 56.7 to 53.6 westbound – Left shoulder and lane closures for the Maury River bridges rehabilitation project. 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Estimated completion is Oct. 6, 2016.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Lane and/or shoulder closures as needed for nighttime mowing.  Tuesday through Saturday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night.

Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, cleaning bridge slopes, ditches, mowing, weedeating and litter removal.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 200 to 202, northbound – Overnight left and center lane closures June 11 and June 12, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning for pavement work on the truck climbing lane project.

Route 11 – Alternating lane closures from Rockbridge/Augusta county line to Route 710 (Fairfield town limits). Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. for pavement work. Estimated completion December 2014.

Route 39 – Alternating lane closures, with flagging operations and pilot truck for traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. for pavement work.  Work zone extends from 0.41 mile east of Route 751 to Route 11. Estimated completion December 2014.

Route 60 – Alternating lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. for pavement work.  Work zone extends from Route 850, the south end of the bridge over I-64, to west of Lexington city limits.  Estimated completion December 2014.

Various roads – Brush cutting, pipe replacement, patching, spot leveling, shoulder repairs, and ditching with flagger traffic control. Mowing with a mobile operation. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 607 (Big Valley Road) – Pavement repairs with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 614 (Cowpasture River South)Rural Rustic tar and gravel road surface work with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 614 (Headwaters area) – Single lane closure with a 10-foot road width limit for bridge deck replacement over the South Fork South Branch of Potomac River. Work zone is 0.07 mile south of Route 620 (Brushy Fork Road) and 0.01 mile north of Route 620 (Spring Run Road). Daytime flagger traffic control and nighttime stop and proceed when clear. Estimated completion June 13, 2014.

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

 

INTERSTATE 64

Exit 87, westbound – Shoulder closure for bridge work at I-81 interchange. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion July 11, 2014.

 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Lane and/or shoulder closures as needed for nighttime mowing.  Wednesday through Saturday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night.

Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, cleaning bridge slopes, mowing, weedeating, litter removal. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 224 – Shoulder closures as needed for bridge repairs on Route

(NEW) Mile marker 228 to 234– Nighttime right shoulder closure for guardrail upgrades and shoulder restoration.  June 8 to 12, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 42 – Alternating lane closures for pavement work 0.27 mile south of Route 754 to 0.04 mile south of Route 809. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion December 2014.

Route 250 – Traffic restricted to single 12 foot lane during Ramsey’s Draft bridge replacement.  Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Traffic controlled by temporary signal. Work zone 1.036 mile west of Route 716 to 1.124 mile west of Route 716.  Estimated completion April 30, 2015.

(NEW) Routes 252 Alternating lane closures with flagger operations for pavement work starting at 0.28 miles west of U.S. Route 11, eastbound to Route 252 and includes Route 252 ramp, Route 703 ramp, Route 254 ramp and Route 250 ramp. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Route 252 – Alternating lane closures as needed for pavement work from just south of Route 701 to 0.36 miles north of Route 802. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion December 2014.

Route 254 (New Hope Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures as needed for bridge repairs at I-81 overpass, 0.07 miles from Staunton City Limits and 1.32 mile from Route 929.  Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion July 11, 2014.

Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) – Intersection work from Route 654 to Route 831. Traffic signal at Route 657 intersection may be disabled during flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Estimated completion Aug. 6, 2014.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 604 (McClures Mill Road) – Surface treatment from Route 662 (Stover School Road) to Route 701 (Howardsville Road) June 19 to June 20, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic control with flaggers and pilot truck. 

(NEW) Route 642 (Barrenridge Road) – Surface treatment from Route 786 (Eakle Road) to Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road) June 9 to June 11, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic control with flaggers and pilot truck. 

(NEW) Route 677(Shemariah Road) – Surface treatment from Route 602 (Summerdean Road) to Route 603 (Cale Springs Road.) June 16 to June 18, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic control with flaggers and pilot truck. 

(NEW) Route 703 (Hewitt Road, Swoope area) – Road closed to all through traffic at the bridge over Middle River for installation of new steel truss bridge. June 16 through August 8. Work zone: 0.99 mile to Route 876 (Swoope Road) and 1.62 miles from Route 708 (Miss Phillips Road.)  Traffic will detour as follows:  From northside of bridge use Route 703 (Hewitt Road) to Route 876 (Swoope Road) to Route 245 (Parkersburg Turnpike).  From southside of bridge use Route 703 (Hewitt Road) to Route 708 (Miss Phillips Road) to Route 254 (Parkersburg Turnpike).

(NEW) Route 709 (Sugarloaf Road) – Surface treatment from Route 710 (Eidson Creek Road) to Route 252 (Middlebrook Road.) June 12 to June 16, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic control with flaggers and pilot truck. 

Route 759 – Period road closures for a Rural Rustic Road construction project.  Monday – Friday, 7:30 a .m. to 3 p.m. between Route 761 and Route 756 (Buck Hill Road).  Posted detours will be in place using Route 756 to Route 730 to Route 761.  Estimated completion Aug. 8, 2014.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY  

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Be alert for debris, bridge cleaning and shoulder mowing. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(NEW) Exit 251, northbound and southbound– Exit off-ramps closed to traffic for paving operations:  Southbound exit 251closed June 10, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. with traffic detoured to exit 245.  Northbound exit 251 closed June 11, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and traffic detoured to exit 257. Exit 251 on-ramps, northbound and southbound, narrowed to 10 feet for this project.

Estimated project completion July 31, 2014.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) ROUTE 11 – Flagger controlled single lane closure June 9, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Route 721 west (Longs Pump Road) to Route 721 east (Fellowship Road) for asphalt paving.   

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 704 (Oakwood Drive, Bridgewater area) – Traffic using temporary two-lane bridge over Cooks Creek. Periodic flagging for construction vehicle access. Work zone from 0.70 mile west of Route 712 to 0.58 mile west of route 712. Estimated completion Oct. 31, 2014.

(UPDATE) Route 726 (Stone Spring Road and Peach Grove Avenue) – Limited portions of Stone Spring Road and Peach Grove Avenue will open the afternoon of June 9 as part of the Route 280 Southeast Connector project.  Motorists should be alert for new stop signs and turning movements.  Continuing work on other portions of the Southeast Connector project may require lane closures and occasional flagger traffic control. Work zone extends from 0.51 mile east of Harrisonburg city limits to 0.15 mile west of city limits. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion November 2014.

(NEW) Route 745 (Martin Miller Road) – Pipe work from Route 257 (Ottobine Road) to Route 744 (Dry Hollow Road). Periodic closures, June 9 to 11, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Road closed on June 12, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Follow posted detours.

Route 754 (Berrytown Road) – Road closed for bridge work between Route 649 and Route 630, near the town of Elkton. June 9 at 8 a.m. to approximately July 8.  Southbound traffic will detour north on Route 754, south on Route 340, and north on Route 649 to Route 754. Northbound traffic will detour south on Route 754, south on Route 649, and north on Route 340 to Route 754.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 265 to 275, northbound.  Right lane closure  June 9 from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m.  Left lane closures at various locations June 10 to June 12, 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. each night – These closures are for a drainage installation project. Estimated project completion June 26, 2014.

(NEW) Mile marker 299 to 2273– Nighttime right shoulder closure for guardrail upgrades and shoulder restoration.  June 8 to 12, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night.

Route 340 – Flagger traffic control from Route 522 to 3.92 miles north for paving operations. 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Estimated completion June 27, 2014.

WARREN COUNTY

 

INTERSTATE 66

(NEW) Mile marker 0 to 7, eastbound – Single lane closures as neede for line painting operations.  Estimated completion June 27, 2014.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 0 to 15, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal and shoulder mowing. Pot hole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

INTERSTATE 81

No lane closures reported.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Bridge replacement work over Gooney Creek from 0.67 miles south of Route 605 to 0.35 miles north of Route 605.  Traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Motorists should expect minor delays. Estimated completion October 2015.

Route 340/522 (North Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road), from Duck Street to 17th Street – Old South Fork bridge replacement and interchange modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road) and 340/522.  Daily lane closures, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and nightly lane closures, 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Friday.  Motorists are advised to allow more time in daily commutes. Estimated completion December 2017.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 613 (Indian Hollow Road) – Bridge work at Shenandoah River.  Road closed for 15 to 30 minute periods on June 6, 9, 10 and 11 for beam placement.  Flagger traffic control. Work is Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion October 2014.

 

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes.

 

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
