TRAFFIC ALERT FOR DECEMBER 15 TO 19, 2014
Highway Work Zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal and clearing sign areas, cleaning bridge ditches and slopes. December 14 to January 3, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., as needed.

(NEW) Mile marker 24 to 25, eastbound and westbound – Single lane and shoulder closures for bridge inspection over Jackson River.  December 16, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 42 (Cowpasture River Road) – Flagger controlled single lane closure over CSX Railway for bridge inspection. December 17, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 159 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for debris removal and crews cleaning paved ditches. December 14 to January 3, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., as needed.

Mile marker 53.3 to 55.3, eastbound and westbound.  Eastbound traffic will detour across the median to the westbound side of the interstate. Both directions of traffic will use westbound Maury River bridge for about a year while the eastbound bridge undergoes rehabilitation. Speed limit is 55 miles per hour.

 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Be alert for debris removal, repairing mile marker signs and cleaning paved ditches. December 14 to January 3, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., as needed.

Mile marker 193 to 190, southbound.  Nighttime left lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., for guardrail upgrades and shoulder paving. Estimated completion Jan. 15, 2015.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 130 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Mile marker 94 to 107, eastbound and westbound – Median shoulder closures and possible right shoulder closures for installation of temporary fence and underground conduit system in median. December 15 to 19, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Estimated completion July 6, 2015. 

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, repairing mile marker signs, tree trimming, cleaning bridge slopes and paved ditches. December 14 to January 3, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., as needed.

Mile marker 207 – Right shoulder closures as needed for repairs on Route 620 bridge over I-81.  December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

Mile marker 219.9 – Shoulder closures as needed for repairs on Route 647 (Christians Creek Road) bridge over I-81. December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

Mile marker 221 – Shoulder closures as needed for repairs on Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) bridge over I-81.  December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 42 (Scenic Highway) Flagger controlled single lane closure as need December 15 to 18 during daylight hours for replacement of concrete post/rail bridge work across Tributary to Mossy Creek at the intersection of Route 607 (Moscow Loop Road) and Route 607(Mount Solon Road). Estimated completion December 18.

Route 250 – Traffic restricted to single 12-foot wide lane during Ramsey’s Draft bridge replacement.  Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Traffic controlled by temporary signal. Work zone 1.04 miles west of Route 716 to 1.12 miles west of Route 716.  Estimated completion April 30, 2015.

Route 250/358 Intersection – Eastbound shoulder closure for gas line installation across Route 250.   

Route 250/642 Intersection – Eastbound shoulder closure for gas line installation.    

Route 254 (New Hope Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed for bridge work over I-81.  December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

(NEW) Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Flagger controlled single lane closure over Middle River for bridge inspection. December 17, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Bridge work over I-81.  December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

(NEW) Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road at I-64 Exit 91) – Single lane closure Monday, December 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for paving work on the bridge widening project. Traffic on both sides of the Route 285 bridge will be affected. Single-lane traffic will be maintained on Route 285 with intersection traffic controlled by police officers. Flagger traffic control will be used throughout the work zone. Drivers should expect occasional stops in both directions lasting up to five to ten minutes per occurrence for the placement of milling/paving equipment.  Motorists should expect significant delays in this area during this work.  All work is weather permitting.

Route 340 – Right shoulder closures as needed at various locations, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for fiber optic installation from Route 11/Greenville to the Augusta/Rockingham County Line. Estimated completion Dec. 31, 2014.

Route 340/635 Intersection – Lane shifts and shoulder closures for gas line installation on northbound shoulder between Route 649 and Route 635. 

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 608 (Tinkling Spring Road) – Nighttime alternating lane closures from Route 778 to Route 865 for milling, paving and pavement marking, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Estimated completion Dec. 20, 2014.

Route 608 (Tinkling Spring Road) – Alternating lane closures with flaggers for improvements at intersection with Route 648.  Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Work will be suspended from December 23 to January 4.  Estimated completion May 31, 2015.

Route 612 – Alternating lane closures as needed for milling, paving and pavement marking from Route 1926 (Kendrick Avenue) to Route 788. 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Estimated completion Dec. 20, 2014.

Route 616 – Nighttime alternating lane closures from Route 626 to Route 744 for milling, paving and pavement marking, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Estimated completion Dec. 20, 2014.

Route 620 (Spotswood Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures for repairs on Route 620 bridge over I-81.  December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed for bridge work over I-81. December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

Route 636 (Lifecore Drive) – Watch for shoulder closures and occasional flagging operations for road-widening project west of Route 285. 

Route 647 (Christians Creek Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed for bridge work over I-81.  December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

Route 648 (Christians Creek Road) – Alternating lane closures with flaggers for intersection improvements at Route 648/Route 608 intersection.  Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Work will be suspended from December 23 to January 4. Estimated completion May 31, 2015.

Route 703 (Hewitt Road) – Road closed over Eidson Creek bridge 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on  December 15 for soil and rock core test borings for future bridge replacement. Detours via Route 876 (Swoope Road) to Route 254 (Parkersburg Turnpike), then to Route 708 (Miss Phillips Road), then back to Route 703.

Route 742 (Toll Gate Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed for bridge work over I-81. December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

Route 750 (Keezletown Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed for bridge work over I-81.  December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

Route 775 (Buttermilk Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure as needed for bridge work over I-81. December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

Route 781 (Mill Race Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures as needed for bridge work over I-81.  December 8 to 18, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion Jan. 29, 2015.

Route 940 – Alternating lane closures as needed for milling, paving and pavement marking from Route 11 to End of State Maintenance. 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Estimated completion Dec. 20, 2014.

(NEW) Route 33 (Spotswood Trail), westbound – Right shoulder closure to replace drop inlet.  Work zone from Greene County Line to 150’ west of Rockingham/Greene County Line. December 15 to 19.

(NEW) Route 33, eastbound and westbound – Single lane and shoulder closure over Norfolk Southern Railway for bridge inspection. December 19, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 280 (Stone Spring Road) – Be alert for new traffic patterns:  New portions of four-lane roadway open between Peach Grove Avenue and Route 253 (Port Republic Road).

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Mowing, litter pickup and pavement repairs as needed.

Route 50, east – Shoulder closures for the construction of a new crossover between Route 781 (Prince Frederick Drive) and Route 655 (Sulphur Spring Road).  Daylight hours.  Estimated completion March 15, 2015.

Route 50 – Shoulder closures for the installation of fiber optic conduit between Route 600 and Route 803.  Estimated completion is Jan. 31, 2015.

Route 522 – Northbound shoulder closures for the installation of fiber optic conduit between Route 679 and the West Virginia Line.  Estimated completion is Jan. 9, 2015.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – New traffic pattern with lane shifts on north and south ends of the bridge replacement project over Gooney Creek. Work zone from 0.67 miles south of Route 605 to 0.35 miles north of Route 605. Traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Motorists should expect minor delays. Estimated completion October 2015.

Route 340/522 (North Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road), from Duck Street to 17th Street – Old South Fork bridge replacement and interchange modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road) and 340/522.  Daily lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and nightly lane closures from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Friday. Additional lane shift and closure of center turn lane from the south end of the bridge to just past 17th Street and closure of 18th Street to through traffic. Through traffic will detour onto North Royal Avenue and 17th Street. Lane shifts on Route 55 just west of Route 340/522. These changes will be in effect through summer 2015.  Estimated bridge completion December 2017.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 603 (Oregon Hollow Road) – Traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for reconstruction of Route 603 from Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) to 0.5 miles north.  Estimated completion Dec. 12, 2014.

(NEW) Various roads – Pipe cleaning, brush cutting and pothole patching. Monday to Friday.

 

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
