TRAFFIC ALERT FOR AUGUST 11 TO AUGUST 15, 2014
Highway Work Zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for removing debris, trimming around signs, and cleaning paved ditches. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 606 (Sioux Street, Clifton Forge) – Right shoulder closure with intermittent flagging for box culvert construction work under I-64.  Estimated completion June 15, 2015.

Route 687 (Jackson River Turnpike) Flagger traffic control at various locations for bridge work over Cowardin Run. Work zone is 0.45 mile north of Route 618 to 0.55 miles north of Route 618.  Estimated completion Sept. 24, 2014.

Various roads – Mowing with a mobile operation. Patching and pipe replacement with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, cleaning paved ditches, and trimming around signs. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 51.4 to 55.2, eastbound and mile marker 56.7 to 53.6, westbound – Lane and shoulder closures as needed. Maury River Bridge rehabilitation project. Estimated completion is Oct. 6, 2016.

 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews tree trimming around signs, removing debris, cleaning bridge ditches. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 193 to 190, southbound.  Nighttime left lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., for guardrail upgrades and shoulder paving. Estimated completion Jan. 15, 2015.

Exit 200, northbound – Alternating lane closures for on-ramp and off-ramp paving. Sunday through Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Estimated completion December 2014.

Mile marker 205.1 to 200.15, including ramp 200A, southboundAlternating lane closures for pavement work. Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each day.  Estimated completion December 2014.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 623 (Fredericksburg Road) – Partial road closure for replacement of two bridges east of Route 621 in Rockbridge Baths area.  One bridge is located 0.25 mile east of Route 621 (Farmhouse Road) and the second bridge is located 0.5 mile east of Route 621. Estimated completion of both bridges Sept. 5, 2014.  Detours:  Eastbound follow Route 602 (Turkey Hill Road) north and Route 39 (Maury River Road) west back to Route 623.  Westbound traffic will follow Route 39 east and Route 602 south back to Route 623.

Various roads – Mowing and brush cutting with a mobile operation.  Patching with flagger control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 600 (Upper Backcreek Road), Route 607 (Big Valley Road), Route 640 (Wimer Mountain Road) – Flagger traffic control at various locations for pipe replacements. Monday to Friday  7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Various roads – Mowing and brush cutting with a mobile operation.  Patching and ditch work with flagger control.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 87, westbound – Shoulder closure for bridge work over I-81 interchange at Mile marker 222.  Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion Aug. 22, 2014.

 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews trimming around signs, removing debris, repairing  mile marker signs and cleaning ditches. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 211 to 206, southboundAlternating lane closures for nighttime pavement work. Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Estimated completion December 2014.

Mile marker 220 – Shoulder closures as needed at exit 220 for bridge work at Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) overpass off I-81.  Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 29, 2014.

Exit 221, northbound and southbound– Shoulder closure for bridge work Aug. 22, 2014.

Mile marker 228 to 238, northbound – Alternating lane closures for nighttime pavement work and guardrail upgrades, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. at I-64 interchange. Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion.  Estimated completion Dec. 24, 2014.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11– Shoulder closures as needed for bridge work at Route 262 overpass (Woodrow Wilson Parkway, eastbound).  Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 29, 2014.

Route 42, south – Mowing with posted signs as alerts.  Monday – Friday, 7:30 a .m. to 3 p.m.

Route 250 – Traffic restricted to single 12 foot lane during Ramsey’s Draft bridge replacement.  Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Traffic controlled by temporary signal. Work zone 1.04 mile west of Route 716 to 1.12 mile west of Route 716.  Estimated completion April 30, 2015.

Route 252 – Mowing with posted signs as alerts.  Monday – Friday, 7:30 a .m. to 3 p.m.

Route 252 – Alternating lane closures as needed for pavement work from just south of Route 701 to 0.36 miles north of Route 802. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion December 2014.

Route 254 – Mowing with posted signs as alerts.  Monday – Friday, 7:30 a .m. to 3 p.m.

Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway)  – Bridge work at I-81 and Route 11 overpasses.  Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 29, 2014.

Route 262 Alternating lane closures with flagger operations for pavement work starting 0.28 miles west of Route 11, eastbound to Route 252. Includes ramps at Route 252, Route 703, Route 254 and Route 250. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Route 340 – Right shoulder closures as needed at various locations, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for fiber optic installation from Route 11/Greenville to the Augusta/Rockingham County Line. Estimated completion Dec. 31, 2014.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 604 (McClures Mill Road near Greenville) – Road closed for bridge replacement at Christians Creek.  Estimated completion Aug. 26, 2014. Work zone is 0.27 mile from Route 817 (Hawpe Road) and 0.01 mile to Route 817 (Spring Leigh Road). A detour is in place with posted signs.

Route 654 (White Hill Road) Bridge work affecting shoulder at exit 217 over I-81.  Monday to Friday. Estimated completion Aug. 29, 2014.

Route 655 (Walnut Hills Road) Flagger controlled lane closure at I-81 overpass for bridge work.  Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion Sept. 4, 2014.

Route 747 – Spot leveling work with flaggers at various locations. Monday – Friday, 7:30 a .m. to 3 p.m.

Route 854– Alternating lane closures for pavement work from Route 11 to Route 1901, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Estimated completion Dec. 20, 2014.

(NEW) Route 1523 (Hayrick Road, Augustine Farms subdivision)  – Lane closures as needed for paving and pavement markings starting at Augusta  Farms Road and ending 0.16 miles east Ox Road.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY  

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Be alert for debris removal and brush work. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(UPDATE) Exit 251, northbound and southbound – Lane closures August 11 to August 14, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and August 15, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. at I-81 exit 251 on- and off-ramps.  Ramp widths restricted to 10’ for overnight guardrail installation. Estimated project completion Aug. 28, 2014.  

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 11 – Lane closures August 11 to August 14, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and August 15, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. at I-81 exit 251 on- and off-ramps.  Ramp widths restricted to 10’ for overnight guardrail installation. Estimated project completion Aug. 28, 2014.  

Route 11 from intersection of I-81 exit 251 to Route 259 – Reflective pavement marker  replacement/inspection in both directions. Work will occur mostly during daylight hours utilizing a mobile work zone. Estimated completion September 15.

Route 33 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

(UPDATE) Route 253 (Port Republic Road) Lane and shoulder closures beginning August 15 to August 29 as needed for construction work between Stone Spring Road and Ridgedale Road.

(NEW) Route 253 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 340 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 646 (Bloomer Spring Road) – Road closed 0.38 mile north of Route 644 intersection and 1.8 miles west of Route 602 (East Point Road) for pipe replacement with 30’ box culvert.  Detours:  From north side of work zone travel Route 646 1.8 miles and turn right onto Route 644. Travel on Route 644 1.3 miles and turn right onto Route 646.  Reverse directions if traveling from south of the project.  Estimated completion is August 20. 

(UPDATE) Route 726 (Stone Spring Road) – Road closed August 15 to 29 between Port Republic Road and Peach Grove Avenue for intersection improvements.  Follow posted detours: Eastbound traffic will detour north on Peach Grove Avenue and east on Port Republic Road back to Route 726.  Westbound traffic will detour west on Port Republic Road and south on Peach Grove Avenue back to Route 726.  

Route 726 (Stone Spring Road and Peach Grove Avenue) – Motorists should be alert for shoulder closures and occasional flagger controlled lane closures on the Route 280 Southeast Connector project. Work zone extends from 0.51 mile east of Harrisonburg city limits to 0.15 mile west of city limits. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion November 2014.

Route 745 (Martin Miller Road) – Pipe work from Route 257 (Ottobine Road) to Route 744 (Dry Hollow Road). Periodic, short duration closures, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Follow posted detours.

Route 758 (Rainbow Trail Road) – Road closed 0.60 mile from Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) to Route 758 (Happy Valley Road) August 13 to August 22 for pipe replacement.  Detour via Happy Valley Road and Rainbow Trail.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Mowing, litter pickup and pavement repairs as needed.

Route 759 (Jollett Road) – Roadway restricted to 11’2” widths during bridge replacement. Traffic controlled by temporary signal.  Work zone 0.50 miles east of Route 607 (Weaver Road). Estimated completion Aug. 15, 2014.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 264 to 300,northbound and southbound – Be alert for debris removal, cleaning paved ditches and guard rail work.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mile marker 265 to 275, northbound.  Nighttime right lane closures at various locations August 18 to August 22, 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. for milling and paving.  Estimated completion Aug. 28, 2014.

Mile marker 280 to 273, southbound.  Nighttime left lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., for guardrail upgrades and shoulder paving. Estimated completion Jan. 15, 2015.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 (Town of Strasburg) – Flagger controlled lane closures for paving operations from Capon Street to Route 55, weather permitting.  Estimated completion August 15.

Route 42 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 263 from Route 42 to 6.45 miles west of Route 42  – Reflective pavement marker replacement/inspection in both directions. Work will occur mostly during daylight hours utilizing a mobile work zone. Estimated completion September 15.

(NEW) Route 642 (Artz Road)  – Alternating lane closures controlled by flaggers and traffic control signs for soil testing for future bridge replacement over North Fork of the Shenandoah River. Work zone 0.6 mi. east of intersection of Artz Road/Route 663 and Old Valley Pike/Route 11 to 0.8 miles east of intersection of Artz Road/Route 663 and Old Valley Pike/Route 11.  August 18 to August 23, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Route 760 (Water Street) – Flagger controlled traffic from Route 1403 to 0.30 mile east for bridge replacement over Stony Creek. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion June 2015.

Route 771 (Boyer Road, Fort Valley area) – Road closed between Route 770 and Route 774 for slope adjustment work.  Estimated completion 3:30 p.m. August 18.  Detours:  Northbound travel east on Route 770 (Dry Run Road), north on route 678 (Fort Valley Road), west on Route 774 (Frenchman Pond Road) to end of detour.  Southbound travel east on Route 774 (Frenchman Pond Road), south on Route 678 (Fort Valley Road), west on Route 770 (Dry Run Road) to end of detour.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 7 from Winchester County Line to Clarke County Line – Reflective pavement marker replacement/inspection in both directions. Work will occur mostly during daylight hours utilizing a mobile work zone. Estimated completion September 15.

(NEW) Route 11 Alternating left lane closures northbound and southbound at Route 37 (JK Robinson Highway) over Route 11for bridge inspection.  August 14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Route 11 - Line painting in both directions. Work will occur mostly during daylight hours utilizing a mobile work zone. Work will be completed by the August 15.

Route 50 from end of four-lane to Route 688 – Reflective pavement marker replacement/inspection in both directions. Work will occur mostly during daylight hours utilizing a mobile work zone. Work will be completed by the August 15.

Route 277 from Route 11 to Route 522 – Reflective pavement marker replacement/inspection in both directions. Work will occur mostly during daylight hours utilizing a mobile work zone. Estimated completion August 15.

Route 522 from Winchester County Line to West Virginia Line – Reflective pavement marker replacement/inspection in both directions. Work will occur mostly during daylight hours utilizing a mobile work zone. Estimated completion August 15.

Route 522 – Shoulder closures northbound lane for the installation of fiber optic conduit between Route 679 and the West Virginia Line.  Estimated completion is Oct. 1, 2014.

(NEW) Route 614 (Back Mountain Road)  – Closed August 13, 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Route 50 to 0.1 mile south of Route 50 for railroad crossing replacement. Detours:  Southbound traffic will use Route 50 (Northwestern Pike) west to Route 600 (South Hayfield Road) south to Route 614.  Northbound traffic will use Route 600 (South Hayfield Road) north to Route 50 (Northwestern Pike) east to Route 614.

(NEW) Route 669 (Rest Church Road) – Paving operations starting at the Route 11(Martinsburg Pike) intersection to 0.5 miles west of Route 11. Traffic controlled by flaggers. Monday to Friday, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion date is August 15.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Bridge replacement work over Gooney Creek from 0.67 miles south of Route 605 to 0.35 miles north of Route 605.  Traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Motorists should expect minor delays. Estimated completion October 2015.

Route 340/522 (North Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road), from Duck Street to 17th Street – Old South Fork bridge replacement and interchange modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road) and 340/522.  Daily lane closures, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and nightly lane closures, 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Friday.  Motorists are advised to allow more time in daily commutes. Estimated completion December 2017.

SECONDARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 603 (Oregon Hollow Road) – Traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for reconstruction of Route 603 from Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) to 0.5 miles north. Estimated completion December 2014.

Route 613 (Indian Hollow Road) – Traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for replacement of low water bridge over South Fork of Shenandoah River. Work zone from Route 628 to 0.35 miles north. Estimated completion October 2014.

(NEW) Various roads – Pipe cleaning.  Monday to Friday.

 

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes.

 

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
