TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF FEBRUARY 25 – MARCH 1, 2013
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and clean ditches, shoulders and median. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Primary Roads 

* (UPDATE) Various roads – Shoulder repairs, brush cutting and pothole patching with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 617 – Road closed for widening and safety improvements. Estimated completion is May 2013.   

* Route 633 – Replacement of Cowpasture River bridge and approaches from 1.46 miles south of Route 634 to 1.14 miles south of Route 634. Be alert for flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is May 17, 2013.

* Route 638 (Natural Well Road) – Bridge over Jackson River closed until further notice for repairs. This location is 0.1-mile west from Route 687 (Jackson River Road) to 0.6-mile east from Route 666 (Morris Hill Road). Motorists can use the following routes for a detour:  Route 687 to Route 641 (Indian Draft Road) to Route 666. Expected completion is mid-March, weather permitting.

* (UPDATE) Various roads – Shoulder repairs, brush cutting and pothole patching with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

BATH COUNTY

Primary Roads

* (UPDATE) Various roads – Shoulder and pothole repairs. Flagger traffic control as needed, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* (UPDATE) Various roads - Brush cutting and pothole repairs. Flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and ditch, shoulder and median cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 173 to 205.5, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and ditch, shoulder and median cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 195 to 200 - Truck climbing lane project area. In late February into early March, all northbound lanes will be closed for bridge deck work on I-81 bridge over Route 710. A detour will be used for traffic in this area.

On Feb. 28 beginning at 8 p.m. until March 1 at 8 a.m. all I-81 northbound traffic will be detoured as follows:
All northbound traffic will exit I-81 at exit 195 near Lexington and Timber Ridge and travel north on Route 11 to Route 710 and then to the I-81 ramps at exit 200.  Traffic will re-enter I-81 at exit 200 near Fairfield.  Motorists will also have the option of bypassing Route 710 continuing north on Route 11 and re-entering I-81 at exit 213 at Greenville.  Signs will be posted notifying the public of this option.

On March 1 at 8 a.m. until March 2 at 12 a.m. traffic will use the I-81 northbound lanes to exit 200.  At exit 200 trucks will detour around the I-81 bridge over Route 710 by using the exit ramps at this interchange, crossing Route 710 and then re-entering I-81 using the on-ramps at this interchange.  Passenger cars and other smaller vehicles will be allowed to stay in the right lane on the I-81 mainline and use the bridge, shifting to the left lane at the end of the bridge.  Signs, traffic devices and flaggers will be used to direct traffic at this location.

On March 2 at 12 a.m. until March 3 at 10 a.m. all I-81 northbound traffic will be detoured as follows:
All northbound traffic will exit I-81 at exit 195 near Lexington and Timber Ridge and travel north on Route 11 to Route 710 and then to the I-81 ramps at exit 200.  Traffic will re-enter I-81 at exit 200 near Fairfield.  Motorists will also have the option of bypassing Route 710 continuing north on Route 11 and re-entering I-81 at exit 213 at Greenville.  Signs will be posted notifying the public of this option. All work is weather permitting. Tow trucks will be on stand-by in the area to assist with any incidents.

Primary Roads

* Route 11 – Fiber optic cable work continues north toward Fairfield and between Maury River and
I-64.  Estimated completion end of April.

* Route 60 (East Nelson Street, City of Lexington) - Bridge over Varner Lane is closed. East Nelson Street traffic from Washington Street to Randolph Street will be rerouted onto Washington Street for the duration of the bridge reconstruction. Watch for detour signs. Estimated completion is Dec. 2013. 

* (UPDATE) Various roads – Trash pick-up. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 608, south end of Forge Road – fiber optic cable work continues into Natural Bridge and Glasgow.

* (NEW) Route 671 (Poplar Hill Road) will be closed approximately .05 mile south of the intersection with Route 786 (Stagecoach Lane) for pipe replacement on March 5, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be no detour. Alternate rain dates are March 6 or 7.

* Route 763 (Lincoln Road) at Route 11. Utility project. Install water transmission line on northwest shoulder of Route 763 for 0.60 mile to the intersection of Route 11. Installation will continue on the east shoulder of Route 11 northbound for 1.23 miles. Crossovers may be closed as work progresses. Estimated completion is February 2013. 

* (UPDATE) Various roads – Grading, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control as needed, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

* (UPDATE) Route 250 – Shoulder repairs and brush cutting at various locations with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 678 – Shoulder closure February 18 to March 8 for shoulder improvement project, 1.37 miles south from Route 615 and 1.93 north miles to Route 612. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with flagger traffic control.

* (UPDATE) Various roads – Pothole repairs with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64
No lane closures reported.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 195 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, ditch, shoulder and median cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 (Lee Highway, Greenville), northbound and southbound – Sewer construction. Shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Estimated completion is November 30, 2013.

* (UPDATE) Route 340 at Route 654 in Stuart Draft – Setting mast arms of new traffic signals. Feb. 27, weather permitting. Expect delays. Estimated completion March 2013.

* Route 340 – Waynesboro, Delphine Avenue Project. Installation of sanitary line and waterline at various locations on Delphine Ave., with retaining wall placement along Delphine Ave. to 4th Street. Be alert for lane closures and flagger traffic control. Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Various roads - Tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY  

Interstate 81 

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 243 to 246 southbound – Cut trees and repair fences. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 251 to 264, northbound and southbound – Repair on-ramp signs, Monday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 283 to 287, northbound and southbound – Paint over graffiti. Monday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

 Primary Roads

* Route 42 (John Wayland Highway) – Slope repair. Shoulder closure and intermittent lane closures controlled by flaggers between Route 257 (Main Street, Dayton) and Route 746 (Herring Drive). Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

*Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.


Secondary Roads 

* Route 609 (Naked Creek Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 (Fleeburg Road, Page County) and Route 609. Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.

* Route 617 (Church Street, Town of Timberville) – Utility upgrades beginning February 11. Intermittent lane closures controlled by flaggers between Route 42 and Route 1521 (East Riverside Drive). Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.

* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road, Town of Broadway) – Road closed over Linville Creek for bridge construction Jan. 21 to March 18, and signal upgrade at Route 42. The closure will be between South Main Street (Route 42) and Early Drive (Route 1415). Watch for detour signage. Estimated completion is April 30, 2013.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

PAGE COUNTY

Primary Road

* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 1.40 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Motorists should use extreme caution and obey posted speed limit. Estimated completion is fall 2013.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 and Route 609 (Naked Creek Road, Rockingham County). Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.

* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, is permanently closed. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.

* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 252, northbound and southbound – Repair fence on ramps. Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

* (NEW) Mile marker 274.4 to 275, southbound – Cut trees and repair fences, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 282 to 290.5, northbound and southbound – Fence repair. Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* (UPDATE) Routes 11/55/1203 in Strasburg. Setting mast arms of new traffic signals. Feb. 25, weather permitting. Expect delays. Estimated completion is April 2013.

* Route 11 at Route 1974 (Holiday Street) in Strasburg. Traffic signal replacement. Estimated completion is April 2013.

 

Secondary Roads

* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 302 to 306, northbound and southbound. Right lane closures for new sign installation, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Estimated completion February 22.

* (NEW) Mile marker 315 to 324, northbound and southbound –Sign and mile marker repairs. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  

* Mile marker 317, northbound – Extend deceleration lane. Night time lane closures, Monday to Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., and daytime shoulder closures. Estimated completion is November 2013.
