SHENANDOAH COUNTY -- BOTH SOUTHBOUND LANES OF I-81 CLOSED FOR ACCIDENT CLEANUP
Traffic Detoured at Exit 283

STAUNTON – Both lanes of I-81 southbound near mile marker 281 in Shenandoah County are closed while crews remove an overturned tractor trailer and make guardrail repairs. The work began about 8 p.m. Thursday and should be complete within the next couple of hours.

The Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton Traffic Operations Center reported that the tractor trailer crashed through the guardrail on Thursday morning and went down an embankment. The location is between Woodstock and Edinburg.

Crews determined about 3 a.m. that a second lane was required for this operation. Southbound I-81 traffic is being detoured onto Route 11 at exit 283. Passenger vehicles can re-enter the interstate at exit 279. Tractor-trailers are directed back on to the interstate at exit 277. Drivers should expect delays for the morning commute.
