TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF DECEMBER 10-14, 2012
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and clean ditches. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Primary Roads 

* Brush cutting at various primary locations, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 617 – Road closed for widening and safety improvements. Estimated completion is May 2013.   

* Route 633 – Replacement of Cowpasture River Bridge and approaches from 1.46 miles south of Route 634 to 1.14 miles south of Route 634. Be alert for flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is May 17, 2013.

* Route 638 (Natural Well Road) – Bridge over Jackson River closed until further notice for repairs. This location is 0.1-mile west from Route 687 (Jackson River Road) to 0.6-mile east from Route 666 (Morris Hill Road). Motorists can use the following routes for a detour:  Route 687 to Route 641 (Indian Draft Road) to Route 666.

* Various roads – Shoulder repairs, pipe replacement, brush cutting and drainage repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 57 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 173 to 205.5, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 196 to 199, northbound single lane closures – Truck climbing lane project. Dec 11, 12 and 13, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

* (UPDATE) Northbound lane closures – Truck climbing lane project. All northbound lanes closed from mile marker 195 to 199, Tuesday Dec. 18, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Traffic will detour off I-81 at Exit 195, then north on Route 11 through Fairfield, then left on Route 710, and then back onto I-81 at Exit 200.

 

Primary Roads

* (UPDATE) Route 11 – Fiber optic cable installation work continues in the area of Route 11 south, from the Route 39 area to the river toward Lexington.

* (UPDATE) Route 11 at Two Suns Road – fiber optic cable work continues north toward I-81.

* (NEW) Route 60 – Tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Route 251 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

Secondary Roads

* (UPDATE) Route 608, south end of Forge Road – fiber optic cable work continues into Natural Bridge and Glasgow.

* (NEW) – Route 710, eastbound  lane closure for installation of structural steel. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Message boards will be placed on Route 11 and Route 710 to inform public of periodic delays throughout the day. Flagger will assist with traffic control.

* Route 763 (Lincoln Road) at Route 11. Utility project. Install water transmission line on northwest shoulder of Route 763 for 0.60 mile to the intersection of Route 11. Installation will continue on the east should of Route 11 northbound for 1.23 miles. The crossover at Lincoln Road may be closed as well as other crossovers as the work progresses. Work includes boring at the intersection of Route 763 and across all lanes of Route 11 to the west shoulder of the southbound lanes. Estimated completion is January 2013.  

 * Various roads – Grading, pothole repairs, pipe replacement, ditching, and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Route 250 – Brush cutting at various locations on Bullpasture Mountain. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 600 (Upper Backcreek Road) – Ditch cleaning at various locations. Flagger control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 pm.

* Various roads – Tree trimming, grading, and pothole repair. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 89.5 to 93.0, eastbound – Guardrail placement. Right shoulder closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

* Mile marker 97.1 to 106.4, eastbound and westbound – Afton Mountain Guardrail Project. Guardrail replacement and installation. Left lane closures and right shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 195 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* (UPDATE) Route 11 (Lee Highway, Greenville), northbound and southbound – Sewer construction. Shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Estimated completion is November 30, 2013.

* Route 252 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Routes 340 at Route 654 in Stuart Draft – Traffic Signal Replacement. Estimated completion March 2013.

* Route 340 – Waynesboro, Delphine Avenue Project. Sanitary line work and barrier wall placement from Delphine Avenue to 4th Street. Be alert for lane closures and flagger traffic control. Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

Interstate 81 

* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal.

Primary Roads

* Route 11, northbound – Bridge work on the bridge over Cooks Creek just north of the intersection with Route 257 near Bridgewater. Beginning Sept. 24, lane closures with a traffic barrier will be in place 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Traffic reduced to a single 12-foot lane with a 14-foot clear width between the barrier. Estimated completion is late December.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road), eastbound and westbound – Pedestrian rail installation on Route 253 Bridge over I-81. Single lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.  Estimated completion Dec. 14, weather permitting.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Turn lane and commercial entrance permit work from Harrisonburg City limits to Route 726 (Stone Spring Road). Work zone will have shoulder closures and intermittent right lane closures.

* (UPDATE) Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads 

* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.

* Route 609 (Naked Creek Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 (Fleeburg Road, Page County) and Route 609. Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On May 22, the traffic pattern will shift from the existing bridge on Route 603 to a temporary bridge during construction of the permanent structure. Estimated completion is April 2013.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.

* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road, Town of Broadway) – Replacement of bridge over Linville Creek and signalization upgrade at Route 42. Possible single lane closures controlled by flaggers Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion is April 30, 2013.Work zone is from 0.275 miles west of Route 42 (South Main Street) to Route 42.

* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

PAGE COUNTY

Primary Road

* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 1.40 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Motorists should use extreme caution and obey posted speed limit. Estimated completion is fall 2013. The bridges are still under construction but the portion of Route 340 from 3.27 miles to 2.95 miles south of the Page and Warren County line will open with new travel lanes after noon on Monday, Nov. 26. Motorists should use extra caution in this area as drives become familiar with this new traffic pattern.

* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 and Route 609 (Naked Creek Road). Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.

* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.

* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 270 to 282 – Single lane closures for bridge repairs, northbound and southbound. Monday nights through Friday mornings, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Estimated completion December 14, weather permitting.

* (NEW) Mile marker 298 to 302, northbound and southbound – Tree cutting. Thursday, Dec. 13, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, weed eating, brush cutting and cleaning under bridge slopes. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Routes 11/55/1203 in Strasburg. Traffic signal replacement. Estimated completion is April 2013.

*Route 11 at Route 1974 (Holiday Street) in Strasburg. Traffic Signal Replacements. Estimated completion is April 2013.

 

Secondary Roads

* Various roads – Tree trimming, Monday to Friday. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

Interstate 81

* (NEW)  Mile marker 304.3 to mile marker 307 (Stephens City area of Frederick County) – There will be a rolling lane closure for all northbound and southbound lanes on Dec. 9 from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. VSP will be conducting the rolling closure. This closure is for Shentel and Metropolitan Communications to place fiber optics cable across I-81. The Alternate date will be Dec. 16 in case of inclement weather.

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, clean ditches, bridge slopes and ramps. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 37 over Route 522. Single lane closure for bridge inspection. Monday, Dec. 10, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

WARREN COUNTY

Interstate 66

*Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* Mile marker 0 to 15, eastbound and westbound – Bridge deck maintenance. Possible single lane traffic, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
