TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF NOVEMBER 26-30, 2012
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and clean ditches. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Main Street, westbound from the intersection of Ridgeway Street to Commercial Avenue now open to traffic. Lane closures as necessary. Estimated completion is Dec. 1.
* Various roads – Pothole repairs, shoulder repairs and drainage repairs. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 617 – Road closed for widening and safety improvements. Estimated completion is May 2013.
* Route 633 – Replacement of Cowpasture River Bridge and approaches from 1.46 miles south of Route 634 to 1.14 miles south of Route 634. Be alert for flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is May 17, 2013.
* Route 638 (Natural Well Road) – Bridge over Jackson River closed until further notice for repairs. This location is 0.1-mile west from Route 687 (Jackson River Road) to 0.6-mile east from Route 666 (Morris Hill Road). Motorists can use the following routes for a detour:  Route 687 to Route 641 (Indian Draft Road) to Route 666.
* Various roads – Patching, pothole repairs, shoulder repairs, pipe replacement and drainage repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Brush cutting, patching, and grading. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 57 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound – Truck climbing lane project. There are no lane closures on I-81 for the truck climbing lane project this week.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Fiber optic cable installation work. Boring at the intersection of Route 11 to Route 39 to I-81 Estimated completion is early December.
* Route 11 - Utility project at Route 763 (Lincoln Road). Install water transmission line on northwest shoulder of Route 763 for 0.60 mile to the intersection of Route 11. Installation will continue on the east should of Route 11 northbound for 1.23 miles. The crossover at Lincoln road may be closed as well as other crossovers as the work progresses. Work includes boring at the intersection of Route 763 and across all lanes of Route 11 to the west shoulder of the southbound lanes. Estimated completion is January 2013.
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 39 – Fiber optic cable installation work. Laying cable on shoulder from Route 11 to the Virginia Horse Center. Shoulder closures and occasional lane closures will occur weekdays. Estimated completion is Nov. 30.
* Route 39 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 60, eastbound – Fiber optic cable installation in the northern shoulder of Route 60 from the Lexington City limits to I-81 and along Route 60 to Route 608 (Forge Road). Shoulder closures and occasional lane closures will occur weekdays. Estimated completion is Nov. 30.
* Route 130 (Wert Faulkner Highway, Glasgow) – Railroad crossing work from 0.37 mile south of Route 501 (Glasgow Highway) to 0.10 mile north of Route 684 (Sallings Mountain Road). Road closed, Nov. 28, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 251 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe cleaning and debris removal. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Grading, shoulder repairs, pipe replacement, box structure cleaning, brush cutting, pipe cleaning and litter pick-up. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Interstate 64
* Mile marker 96.77 to 86.97, westbound – Guardrail placement. Left lane closure, weeknights, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 97.1 to 106.4, eastbound and westbound – Afton Mountain Guardrail Project. Guardrail replacement and installation. Right shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 11 (Lee Highway, Greenville), northbound and southbound – Sewer construction. Shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 30.
* Route 252 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 340 – Waynesboro, Delphine Avenue Project. Sanitary line work and barrier wall placement from Delphine Avenue to 4th Street. Be alert for lane closures and flagger traffic control. Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 733 (Moffett Branch Road) – Bridge over Elk Run is closed until further notice for repairs. Detour is Dudley Farm Road to Union Church Road to Hupman Road.
* Route 891 (Newton Lane) Rural rustic road paving project, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion is Dec. 5.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, clean bridge slope, ditch cleaning and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11, northbound – Bridge work on the bridge over Cooks Creek just north of the intersection with Route 257 near Bridgewater. Beginning Sept. 24, lane closures with a traffic barrier will be in place 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Traffic reduced to a single 12-foot lane with a 14-foot clear width between the barrier. Estimated completion is late December.
* Route 33, westbound – Construction from Route 602 to Route 644. Shoulder and lane closures, weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 33, westbound (Rawley Pike) – Waterline installation at intersection of Route 726. Shoulder closed, weekdays, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 211 – Paving, pavement marking and shoulder stone. Pilot vehicle and flaggers. Single lane closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road), eastbound and westbound – Pedestrian rail installation on Route 253 Bridge over I-81. Single lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Turn lane and commercial entrance permit work from Harrisonburg City limits to Route 726 (Stone Spring Road). Work zone will have shoulder closures and intermittent right-lane closures.
* Various roads – Spot leveling. Pilot vehicle and flaggers. Single lane closure, Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 602 – Construction from Route 602 to Route 644. Shoulder closures with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 609 (Naked Creek Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 (Fleeburg Road, Page County) and Route 609. Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On May 22, the traffic pattern will shift from the existing bridge on Route 603 to a temporary bridge during construction of the permanent structure. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.
* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road, Town of Broadway) – Replacement of bridge over Linville Creek and signalization upgrade at Route 42. Possible single lane closures controlled by flaggers Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion is April 30, 2013.Work zone is from 0.275 miles west of Route 42 (South Main Street) to Route 42. There will be a road closure beginning mid-morning on Nov. 7 and lasting until mid-December. Crews will be widening Springbrook Road near the Linville Creek Bridge. Residents and school bus traffic will continue to have access to this area.
Motorists can use the following detour:
• From South Main Street (Route 42) south of Broadway and from Springbrook Road west of Broadway, travel on South Main Street north to Turner Avenue (Route 1414). Follow detour signs and turn left onto Turner Avenue. Travel west on Turner Avenue to Sunset Drive (Route 617). Turn left onto Sunset Drive heading south to Springbrook Road. Turn left onto Springbrook Road heading east to Early Drive (Route 1415).
• From South Main Street north of Broadway, turn right onto Turner Avenue. Follow Turner Avenue west to Sunset Drive. Turn left on to Sunset Drive heading south to Springbrook Road. Turn left onto Springbrook Road headed east to Early Drive.
* Various roads – Pothole patching hard surface roads and machining dirt roads. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* (UPDATE) Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 1.40 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Motorists should use extreme caution and obey posted speed limit. Estimated completion is fall 2013. (UPDATE) The bridges are still under construction but the portion of Route 340 from 3.27 miles to 2.95 miles south of the Page and Warren County line will open with new travel lanes after noon on Monday, Nov. 26. Motorists should use extra caution in this area as drives become familiar with this new traffic pattern.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 and Route 609 (Naked Creek Road). Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, sign work, brush cutting and cleaning drains and culverts. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 306.53 to 303.73, southbound – Paving. Alternating lane closures, Sunday night to Thursday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Dec. 1.
* Mile marker 313 to 315, northbound and southbound – In conjunction with the Route 657/Senseny Road Bridge deck replacement work. Shoulder closures and intermittent nighttime lane closures beginning Feb. 20 for installation of barrier for shoulder closures. Estimated completion is November 30.
* Mile marker 313.31 to 310.12, southbound – Guardrail work. Alternating lane closures, Sunday night to Thursday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion Dec. 1.

* Route 522 – Inspection of bridge over Shenandoah River. Single lane closure, Nov. 26 to 30, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.
