TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF MAY 14-18, 2012
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, repair cable rail sockets, post replacement and clean ditches. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 5 to 15, eastbound and westbound – Brush cutting. Shoulder closures, Monday to Friday during daylight hours.
* Mile marker 7.3 to 16.5, eastbound and westbound – Median Guardrail Installation Project. Single-lane traffic and shoulder closures, Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 30.
* Mile marker 7.6, eastbound and westbound – Repair bridges over Ogle Creek. Single-lane closure and occasional shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Estimated completion is June 22.
* Mile marker 9.6, eastbound and westbound – Repair bridges over Route 600 and Johnson Creek. Right shoulder closed and occasional lane closures, Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Estimated completion is June 1.

Primary Roads
* Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Main Street, westbound from the intersection of Ridgeway Street to Commercial Avenue will be closed September 8, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Westbound traffic will detour onto Ridgeway Street. Ridgway Street, eastbound and westbound, will have two-way traffic during this time. Bridge construction will occur from September 19, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Main Street closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.
* Various roads – Patching, pipe installation, ditching, mowing and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 633 – Replacement of Cowpasture River Bridge and approaches from 1.46 miles south of Route 634 to 1.14 miles south of Route 634. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Sunday. Estimated completion is May 17, 2013.
* Various roads – Slurry seal treatment. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is late May.
* Various roads – Patching, pipe installation, ditching, mowing and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 39 – Embankment work from West Virginia state line to one-mile east of West Virginia state line. Single-lane traffic, Apr. 17 to May 25, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Slurry seal treatment. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is late May.
* Various roads – Pipe replacement, sweeping, grading, pothole patching and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 57 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, mowing, sign work and rock removal from shoulders. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound – Truck climbing lane project. There are no lane closures on I-81 for the truck climbing lane project this week.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 39 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Paving, patching, shoulder repairs, ditching, litter pickup, pipe cleaning, pipe replacement, mowing and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 84 – Paving, line marking and placement of shoulder stone from Route 220 to Route 600. Single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is May 18.
* (NEW) Route 220 – Shoulder repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 220, southbound – Ditching. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 250 – Shoulder repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Work may take place 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 25 mph. Estimated completion is October 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Route 604 (Valley Center Road) – Plant mix repairs.
* Route 607 (Big Valley Road) – Plant mix repairs.
* Route 629 (Strait Creek Road) – Plant mix repairs.
* Route 678 (Bullpasture River Road) – Ditching. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Various roads – Patching. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and shoulder repair. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 219 to 223, northbound and southbound – Road work. Right shoulder closed, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 42 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Lane closures as necessary from Goose Creek Road to Old White Bridge Road, Monday to Friday. Eastbound right turn lane curb and pavement demolition at intersection of Good Creek Road and Jefferson Highway, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 256 – Paving from Route 11 to 0.91 mile east of Route 11. Single-lane closure with flagger traffic control, May 21, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* (NEW) Route 262 – Railroad track replacement. Road closed at intersection of Route 11, June 2 and 3.
* Route 340 – Delphine Avenue Project. All traffic has been shifted to the east side of Delphine Avenue. Roadway grading and stone work. Sewer work to close 4th Street with a detour posted. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Single-lane traffic controlled by message board or flagger.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) – Pavement demolition, grading, stone base installation and curb and gutter installation. Grading at intersection of Douglas Lane. Single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is May 18. On May 10, traffic switch will occur between the existing portion of Goose Creek Road and the new signal controlled intersection at Route 250.
* Route 773 (Caveview Lane) – Bridge Widening Project. Road closed, May 7 to 24.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Single-lane traffic controlled by message board or flagger.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (North Valley Pike) – Pipe installation from Route 865 (Gravels Road) to Route 963 (Windy Knoll Drive). Intermittent lane closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Traffic controlled by pilot truck.
* Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Cross pipe replacement from 0.20 mile west of Route 734 (Bank Church Road). Intermittent lane closure, daily, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 33 – Utility work from Route 276 (Cross Keys Road) to Route 704 (Boyers Road). Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is June 30.
* Route 340 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Single-lane traffic controlled by message board or flagger.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 609 (Naked Creek Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) and Route 609. Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.
* Route 734 (Lumber Mill Road) – Road bore, new pipe installation and riprap for slope protection 0.185 mile west of Route 734 in the Dale Enterprise area. Single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 1421 (Springbrook Road, Town of Broadway) – Relocation of bridge over Linville Creek from 0.275 miles west of intersection route 42 (South Main Street) to intersection of route 42. Signalization upgrade at intersection of route 42. Shared use path to existing bridge and realignment of route 1421 and route 1415 (Early Drive), 200-feet south of intersection Route 1421. Intermittent single lane closures controlled by flaggers, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion is April 30, 2013.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Single-lane traffic controlled by message board or flagger.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 1.4 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 and Route 609 (Naked Creek Road). Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.
* Route 653 (Sedwick Road) – Reconstruction and surface treatment from Route 675 to Route 654. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours. Estimated completion is July.
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, pipe cleaning, ditch cleaning, sign work and guardrail cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Various locations – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures, Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Paving from north of Woodstock town limits to the Route 42 interchange. Traffic controlled by pilot vehicle and flaggers, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Estimated completion is May 18.
* Route 55 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing.

Secondary Roads
* Route 623 – Back Road Project. Construction of new alignment Route 638 and Route 623. Daily blasting operations will occur. Traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to7 p.m. Estimated completion is fall 2012.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, fence repair, drainage work, pipe and ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 313 to 315, northbound and southbound – In conjunction with the Route 657/Senseny Road Bridge deck replacement work. Shoulder closures and intermittent nighttime lane closures beginning Feb. 20 for installation of barrier for shoulder closures. Estimated completion is mid-August 2012.
* (NEW) Mile marker 307 to 310, northbound and southbound – Inspection of bridges over Opequon Creek. Alternating right shoulder closures, Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 310, northbound and southbound – Inspection of Route 37 (J Kenneth Robinson Highway), southbound bridge over I-81. Alternating right shoulder closures, Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 7, eastbound and westbound – Close existing crossover at Route 656 (Morgan’s Mill Road). Left lane closed, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is Aug. 4.
* (NEW) Route 37, northbound and southbound – Inspection of Route 651 bridge over Route 37, northbound and southbound. Northbound right lane and shoulder closed and southbound left lane closed Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Route 522, southbound – Paving from Route 681 to Route 127. Alternating lane closures, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is late May.

Secondary Roads
* Route 657 (Senseny Road, Winchester) – Deck replacement work on bridge over I-81 from Millwood Pike (Route 522/50/17) and Berryville Pike (Route 7). Single-lane traffic with 10.5-foot width restriction, controlled by temporary signals. Work begins the week of Feb. 27. Estimated completion is mid-August 2012.

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 7, eastbound and westbound – Install turn lane extensions at various crossovers from Route 635 to Route 660. Left lane closed, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Estimated completion is Aug. 4.
* Route 7 Business (West Main Street) – Mosby Boulevard Project. Construction of Route 636/Mosby Boulevard extension and round about. Flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is May 2013.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 1 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, ditch and pipe cleaning Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Traffic switch to the new Rockland Road will take place Feb. 7 at 9 a.m. Traffic traveling northbound on 340/522 will be able to turn right at the light onto the newly constructed Rockland Road. Traffic traveling southbound on 340/522 will be able to turn left at the light onto the newly constructed Rockland Road. Estimated completion is summer 2012.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 604 (Harmony Hollow Road) – Bridge deck replacement at the intersection of Route 601 (Pomeroy Road) beginning May 21. Bridge width restricted to 11-feet during construction. Estimated completion is mid-June.
* (NEW) Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Grading and pipe replacement.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
