TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF NOVEMBER 21-25, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and guardrail work. Monday to Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. All travel lanes are open with shoulder closures remaining. Some work to the median barrier will continue but will feature temporary lane closures.

Primary Roads
* Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Main Street, westbound from the intersection of Ridgeway Street to Commercial Avenue will be closed September 8, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Westbound traffic will detour onto Ridgeway Street. Ridgway Street, eastbound and westbound, will have two-way traffic during this time. Bridge construction will occur from September 19, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Main Street closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.

Secondary Roads
* Route 661 – Bridge deck replacement at intersections of Route 600 and Route 683. Traffic reduced to one 10-foot lane, 24 hours-a-day. Traffic controlled with temporary signals. Estimated completion is late December.
* Various roads – Brush cutting, tree trimming and patching. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
No lane closures reported.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Brush cutting, patching, pothole repairs, tree trimming and pipe replacement. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* (NEW) Mile marker 57 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and sign work. Monday to Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205.1, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, sign work and ditch cleaning. Monday to Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound – Truck climbing lane project. There are no lane closures on I-81 for the truck climbing lane project this week.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 11 – Bridge inspection at I-81 northbound and southbound mile markers 195 to 196 over Route 11. Single-lane closures, Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Mowing. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 651 (Honey Hollow Road) – Rural rustic project with pipe installation. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Various roads – Mowing, grading, shoulder repairs, plant mix and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Work will take place 24 hours-a-day. Estimated completion is October 2012.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Various roads – Grading, shoulder repairs and pothole repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
No lane closures reported.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and sign work. Monday to Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Backfill curb and gutter and seeding between Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) and Route 640 (Old White Bridge Road). Westbound turn lane closed, Nov. 21, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
*Route 256 – Shoulder closures from Route 276 (Keezletown Road to Route 847 (Valley Church Road).
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 862 (Furnace Road) – Roadway upgrades and rural rustic work from Route 601 (Estaline Valley Road) and end of state maintenance. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1204 – Rural rustic road project. Intermittent lane closures.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340 – Shoulder closure from Route 649 (Island Ford Road) to Route 642 (Captain Yancey Road) for railroad crossing repairs. Completion is Dec. 31.

Secondary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* (NEW) Route 602 (East Point Road) – Pipe culvert rehabilitation from 0.16 mile south of Route 665 to 0.24 mile north of Route 635. Shoulder closure and possible single-lane traffic, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.
* Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Dec. 31.
* Route 1417 (East Avenue) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1418 (Second Street) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1424 (Lindsey Avenue) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closure and possible shoulder closure.
* Route 1432 (Fifth Street) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal; brush cutting; clean ditches and guardrail area; and delineator, sign, guardrail and cable work. Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Mowing and scraping.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Beaver Dam management, delineator work and trim bridge slopes. Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Paving from Shenandoah County line to South Middletown town limits. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Estimated completion is Dec. 1.
* Various roads – Mowing.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Grading and mowing.

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads

Secondary Roads
* Route 604 (Ebenezer Road) – Box culvert installation from 0.25 mile south of Route 607 (Sawmill Hill Road). Road closed. Detour posted. Estimated completion is late November.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 300 to 301, northbound – Bridge inspection at the I-66 eastbound ramp over I-81. Shoulder closures, Monday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Mowing.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
