TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF NOVEMBER 7-11, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, post replacement and tree removal. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 15 to 30, eastbound and westbound – Maintenance on various bridge structures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. All travel lanes are open with shoulder closures remaining. Some work to the median barrier will continue but will feature temporary lane closures.

Primary Roads
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Main Street, westbound from the intersection of Ridgeway Street to Commercial Avenue will be closed September 8, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Westbound traffic will detour onto Ridgeway Street. Ridgway Street, eastbound and westbound, will have two-way traffic during this time. Bridge construction will occur from September 19, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Main Street closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.

Secondary Roads
* Route 661 – Bridge deck replacement at intersections of Route 600 and Route 683. Traffic reduced to one 10-foot lane, 24 hours-a-day. Traffic controlled with temporary signals. Estimated completion is late November.
* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
No lane closures reported.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Brush cutting, patching, pothole repairs, tree trimming and pipe replacement. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 56.8, eastbound – Bridge work, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 18.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205.1, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, sign work and tree removal. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 191.5, northbound and southbound – At I-81 and I-64 interchange. Bridge work. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 18.
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound – Truck climbing lane project. There are no lane closures on I-81 for the truck climbing lane project this week.

Secondary Roads
* Route 716 – I-81 Truck climbing lane project. The Route 716 Bridge will be closed for demolition work on Nov. 8, 9 and 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Various roads – Grading, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, plant mix and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 764 (Possum Hollow Road) – Bank stabilization. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Work will take place 24 hours-a-day. Estimated completion is October 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Route 614 (Cowpasture Road), northbound – Plant mix and boom ax repairs. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 644 (Hardscrabble Road) – Pipe replacement. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
No lane closures reported.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, mowing and tree removal. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 33, westbound – Test borings between Route 644 and Route 602. Temporary lane closures, Nov. 10, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Storm sewer work between Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) and Route 640 (Old White Bridge Road). Right eastbound lane closed, Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
*Route 256 – Shoulder closures from Route 276 (Keezletown Road to Route 847 (Valley Church Road).
* Route 340 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 602, southbound – Pavement boring just north of the Route 33 intersection. Temporary lane closures, Nov. 10, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 608 – Stripping. Single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control and pilot truck.
* (NEW) Route 642 – Stripping. Single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control and pilot truck.
* Route 652 (University Farm Road) – Roadway upgrades from Route 340 to Route 657 (Indian Ridge Road). Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Nov. 11.
* Route 728 – Stripping. Single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control and pilot truck.
* Route 736 – Paving and stripping. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Flagger traffic control and pilot truck.
* Route 862 (Furnace Road) – Roadway upgrades and rural rustic work from Route 601 (Estaline Valley Road) and end of state maintenance. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1204 – Rural rustic road project. Intermittent lane closures from Nov. 7 to 11.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, ditch cleaning and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 11 – Shoulder work from 1.00 mile south of Route 794 to 0.30 mile north of Route 704. Single-lane traffic, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 33, eastbound and westbound – Maintenance of bridges over I-81 at Harrisonburg exit 247. Single-lane closure, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 42 – Shoulder work from Route 772 to Route 753. Single-lane traffic, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 256 – Shoulder work Route 340 to Rockingham County line. Single-lane traffic, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 340 – Shoulder closure from Route 649 (Island Ford Road) to Route 642 (Captain Yancey Road) for railroad crossing repairs. Completion is December 31, 2011.

Secondary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* (NEW) Route 602 – Paving from Route 637 to Shenandoah River Bridge, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 602 (East Point Road) – Pipe culvert rehabilitation from 0.16 mile south of Route 665 to 0.24 mile north of Route 635. Shoulder closure and possible single-lane closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 704 – Paving from Route 11 to Route 988, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 710 – Paving from Route 895 to Harrisonburg City limits, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.
* (NEW) Route 763 – Paving from Route 765 to Harrisonburg City limits, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Dec. 31.
* (NEW) Route 988 – Paving from Route 704 to Harrisonburg City limits, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 1417 (East Avenue) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1418 (Second Street) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1424 (Lindsey Avenue) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closure and possible shoulder closure.
* Route 1432 (Fifth Street) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, clean ditches, guardrail work, sign work and tree trimming. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Paving from Route 211 westbound to Route 1020 in the Town of New Market. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 10.

Secondary Roads
* Route 720 (Wissler Road) – Maintenance work at the Meems Bottom Bridge near the Town of Mount Jackson. Road closed, Oct. 31 to Nov. 11, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Detour posted.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing, shoulder work, pipe replacement, slope repair, sinkhole repair and scraping.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Beaver Dam management, trim bridge slopes and delineator work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Northbound and southbound – Bridges at Route 744 and Route 7. Bridge painting, Sunday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and on Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Alternating lane closures. Estimated height clearance is 15 feet at the Route 7 Bridge and 14 feet and 6 inches at the Route 744 Bridge. Detours may be used. Estimated completion is Nov. 18.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 11 – Paving from Shenandoah County line to South Middletown town limits. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Estimated completion is Dec. 1.

* Route 761 (Old Charlestown Road) – Traffic restrictions on bridge 3 miles west of Route 632 to 0.96 mile east of Route 666 at the Clarke County/Frederick County line. Single-lane traffic with 11-foot width restriction. Bridge restricted to vehicles weighing under 16-tonS and tractor trailers are prohibited. Detour posted until further notice.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing and scraping.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.
* Route 340/522, northbound and southbound – Paving from 0.06 mile south of Route 731 to 0.55 mile south of I-66. Work is 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. seven nights a week. Work will also take place on Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Completion is Nov. 10, 2011.
