TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 19-23, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, mowing and cleaning under guardrail. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Eastbound and westbound left lane closures with right shoulder closures at various locations. Wide loads up to 11-feet in width can proceed through the work zones. Work zone and traffic pattern changes may occur late in the week.

Primary Roads
* Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Traffic signal work from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15 at West Ridgeway Street (Route 60/220) and Commercial Avenue. This work will take place Monday to Thursday each week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should be alert for shoulder closures on Commercial Avenue and on Business Route 60/220, which will limit parking. Main Street, westbound from the intersection of Ridgeway Street to Commercial Avenue will be closed September 8, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Westbound traffic will detour onto Ridgeway Street. Ridgway Street, eastbound and westbound, will have two-way traffic during this time.
Bridge construction will occur from September 19, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Main Street closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.
* (NEW) Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 159 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

Secondary Roads
* Route 608 (Wolfe Road) – Rural rustic project, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Route 677 (Personage Road) – Rural rustic project, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Various Roads – Patching and mowing. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 39 – Pipe culvert rehabilitation from 0.90 miles east of the West Virginia state line to 1.10 miles west of Route 601. Shoulder closure and possible single-lane closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 220 – Ditch. Single-lane closures with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Ditch cleaning. Single-lane closures with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Various roads – Pipe replacement and patching. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, mowing and cleaning under guardrail. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 56.8, eastbound – Bridge work, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173.9 to 205.1, northbound and southbound – Debris removal. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 181.7 to 181.9, southbound – Drilling boreholes. Single-lane closed, Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
* Mile marker 191.5, northbound and southbound – At I-81 and I-64 interchange. Bridge work. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.
* (NEW) Mile Marker 195, southbound – Bridge deck work on the I-81 bridge over Route 11. Single-lane closed 24 hours-a-day beginning at 9 p.m., Sept. 23 and lasting until 7 a.m., Sept. 27. The exit 195 off-ramp will be closed on Sept. 23 beginning at 7 p.m., to permit work zone set-up and traffic control. The ramp will be reopened around 9 p.m. During the bridge deck work, tractor trailers will remain on I-81 and passenger vehicles will take a detour using the exit 195 off-ramp, cross Route 11 with the assistance of flagger traffic control and then immediately re-enter I-81 using the exit 195 on-ramp.
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 195, northbound – Truck climbing lane project. Paving and guardrail installation for a traffic shift. Shoulder and part of the acceleration lane will be closed at the mile marker 195 on-ramp Sept. 19-23, 24 hours-a-day.

Primary Roads
* Route 39 – Repair work on bridge over Maury River at Rockbridge Baths. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday. Flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Oct. 6.
* (NEW) Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

Secondary Roads
* Route 602 (Walkers Creek Road) – Bridge work at 0.05 miles south of Route 724 (Jump Mountain Road) and 1.15 miles west of Route 731 (Dutch Hollow Road). Road closed, Sept. 21 to Oct. 13.
* Route 651 (Honey Hollow Road) – Rural rustic paving project and culvert replacement, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Route 670 (Spring Valley Road) – Brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 697 (Amole Hollow Road) – Bridge replacement from 0.05 mile south of Route 699 (Wesley Chapel Road) to the dead end. Road closed, Aug. 16 to Sept. 22. Single-lane traffic detour in place. Traffic controlled with a stop and proceed sign.
* (NEW) Various roads – Grading, pipe cleaning and brush cutting. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing. Mobile operation, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 220, southbound – Pipe repairs, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Estimated completion is October 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Route 600 U – Brush control from Route 84 to 7-miles in. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.
* Route 614 (Cowpasture Road) – Pipe replacement and chip seal 1.00 mile north of Route 619 (Botkin Hollow Road). Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 615 – Brush control from Route 678 to Route 250. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.
* Route 615 (Davis Run Road) – Rural rustic project. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 618 – Brush control from Route 614 to dead end. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.

* Route 654 (Doe Hill Road) – Bridge work at 0.04 miles north of Route 624 (Jack Mountain Road). Road reduced to one 10-foot lane, 24 hours-a-day. Traffic controlled by temporary signals. Estimated completion is mid December.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
* (NEW) Mile marker 90 to 96, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder and crossover work. Intermittent lane closures, Sept. 19 to 22, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris and tree removal. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 205.58 to 209.85, southbound – Paving work. Paving complete. Installation of rumble strips, pavement markers and guardrail will require a lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion of miscellaneous activities is Oct. 16.
* Mile marker 210.4 to 210.7 – Repair of bridges over Route 675. Lane closures, Monday night to Thursday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 30.
* Mile marker 212.2 to 211.9 – Repair bridges over Route 662. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 30.
* Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. Mid-June to September, there will be nighttime single-lane closures I-81 southbound between exit 217 and exit 213, Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. Under-drain installation and asphalt placement will occur from mile marker 218 to 214, southbound. Alternating lane and shoulder closures, Sunday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion of under-drain and asphalt work is Sept. 30.
* Mile marker 219.3 to 219.6, northbound and southbound – Repair of bridges over Folly Mills Creek. Lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Possible shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday. Estimated completion is Sept. 30.
* Mile marker 222 to 223, northbound and southbound – Bridge inspection on Bridge over CSX Railroad and access road. Work is Sept. 19 from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m., northbound. Also 12 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., southbound. Single lane closures.
* Mile marker 225 to 226 northbound and southbound – Bridge inspection on Bridge over Woodrow Wilson Parkway. Work is Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., northbound and 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. southbound. Single lane closures.
* Exit 227 – Bridge work on Route 612 bridge. I-81 single lane closures, Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 15.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 340 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 652 (University Farm Road) – Roadway upgrades from Route 340 to Route 657 (Indian Ridge Road). Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Sept. 24.
* Route 656 – Maintenance work on Bridge over South River just south of Route 657. Possible single-lane closures, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.
* Route 716 – Road reconstruction, widening and pipe installation from Route 629 to Route 250. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is early October.
* Route 753 (Slate Hill Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 732 (Roman Road) to Route 752 (Naked Creek Road). Road closed, Sept. 12 to 28. Detour posted.
* Route 862 (Furnace Road) – Roadway upgrades and rural rustic work from Route 601 (Estaline Valley Road) and end of state maintenance. Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Sept. 24.
* Route 1204 (Blacksmith Shop Road) – Roadway upgrades. Intermittent lane closures, Sept. 6-24.

* Mile marker 244.5 to 236.9, southbound – Installation of pavement markers and rumble strip. Left and right lane closures, Sept. 18 to 23.

* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent single lane closures with flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.
* Route 1417 (East Avenue) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1418 (Second Street) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road) – Bridge work from Route 42 (Harpine Highway) to Route 1415 (Early Road). Intermittent lane and bridge closures. Work estimated to begin on July 18.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* (NEW) Route 340 – Bridge painting under Route 211. Alternating lane closures, 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. Estimated completion is Oct. 7.
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 616 – Paving and pavement striping from Route 633 (Mill Creek Crossroads) to Route 639 (Lakewood Road), Sept. 19 to 23.
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted. Estimated completion for cul-de-sac work is October 2011.
* Route 759 – Pipe work, 0.90 miles east of Route 607. Shoulder closure and possible single lane closure Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81

* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards.

Secondary Roads
* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). Motorists should expect daily lane closures.
* (NEW) Various roads – Shoulder work and mowing.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
